Rusty tailgate

So my problem is that there is quite a bit of rust along the top outside of the tailgate from the canopy door i was thinking of masking it off and sanding it down to get most of the rust off my problem is i dont know what to spray on after i get it all sanded i want something that i can buy at an auto part store or auto body supply. i was thinking something that will stop anymore rust and then i can always spray some primer on over that does anyone have any suggestions on what to use for the whole job also need advice on what to use to sand it i will probably being doing it by hand if that helps. Thanks for any suggestions!!!!!!!

iwould use rust oleum or krylon my personal favorite is rustoleum. really any sandpaper will be fine coarse to get the rust off maybe 150 and 280 or somethin before paint. i live in yelm ive got a 2nd gen tailgate you could buy it has no rust

so i have a new question still concerning the tailgate. there is quite a few pits from the rust and they really show now that i sprayed the area with primer wondering what i could use to fill this in. i really don't know what to use and i really don't mind if it requires me to sand the primer off so any thing that doesn't require specialty tools is welcome.

dose it really matter ???

seriously .. the pitts (unless you dipped in acid) are veins of rust .. right now , what ever you do is a waist of money and time ..

so you can smooth out with bondo or something , and then prime and paint .. but your not fixing the rust .. just creating a "bandaid" for a while .
