Rusty Frame

Has anybody had any luck having a rusted frame repaired? My 87 has a small rust hole right above the front of the rear spring bracket. I don't know if it can be cut out & a new repair panel welded in it place. Any Ideas??

I had mine plated, (see my buildup). There was a thread where a patch was made, just what you're looking for, but I can't find it. The guy was in Virginia I think.

Definately repairable. You can usually cut out the rot and weld in plates. I would remove the bed, clean up the entire frame as best as you can and coat with a good rust prohibitor paint.

do you have a link to por-15 and i have tried to coat the insides of frames with undercoating and such <-- but seriously doubt i am getting even a third of it -- Any suggestions (outside of dipping the frame) ? I am currently repairing yet another frame that I plan on keeping and would like to try harder on treating the insides. Thanks in advance

Funny story, I had an 82' that was terribly rusted out just infront of the shackles. We took the bed off, and decided to drive the truck 2 miles to where the closest carwash was. everything was going fine untill the frame completely caved in! The center of the truck was sitting on the ground, both the front and rear were way in the air. Wish I had a picture to show you all.

Get it fixed before something like that happens! Make sure you do a good job, and be sure to tie the shacklle mounts into the new plate. Hiriden

yes remember, rust in frames usually happens from the inside out, i would take a hamma and tap all around the frame to find any weaker points. I would get it fixed properly, then coat with por15 or something of the like, to do the inside just pour and rock the frame, make sure you get rid of every piece or else it was just a waste of time.

I have not tried any of these products -- but interesting reading material none the less!

Here is another one that is supposed to be as good as Por 15 and cheaper. I've never used it myself but a friend of mine has nad he swears by it.

I may be trying it myself. I haven't decided yet.

The challenge certainly is getting at the inside of the frame where the majority of the rusting is happening. If you're looking for the best rust converter, for my money it's Fertan - developed for the British Navy and widely used in marine industries, it contains zinc which helps deal with the salt. It was the only thing that had any effect on my rust bucket '64 Triumph TR4. After treating w/Fertan, use POR-15 or KBS RustSeal for maximum protection.
