rusty camshaft?

You need to find a machinist's straight edge, and take a feeler gauge to check the head gasket side of the cylinder head for warpage. Also, taking the head to a machinist would mean he can check the dimensions of the cams and possibly grind the cam for you. If you're just going for the "install head gasket, cross fingers, and turn key" method to try to save cash, just be prepared to have to do the same job again when you find a problem with a valve or head warpage or lower end issues... Make sure to get a compression check on that engine before you throw it back in the vehicle and try to start it up. It could save you a whole ton of heartache finding out that there is a massive compression loss in a cylinder and then trying to track it down with a cylinder leakage test rather than putting it all back in, hooking it up, and having to try to reach those incredibly annoying rear spark plug holes... I hate to think of the hair loss that would induce.

If fine grit sand paper does not remove it totally "replace" cam shafts. If there are any pits or scars in the camshaft "replace." Get a "good" set of head gaskets as well. Otherwise good luck on build
