It was org a Texas truck one owner. never really sees winter cept maybe this year and I dont think 80s Toyotas are high on the theft lists here. Im just converting to a suburbaite anyways.

I use a Yakima as well



Back then I used a "side loader" clip to avoid breaking the fiberglass "drip rail" (dont ask how I know).

If I were doing it today Id use "landing pads" on the top to get a rear bar further back.

Im guessing thats what SKNKWRX did...

Y'all don't have to drill or use the fiberglass drip rail with the old Yak system. I have YAK SST towers with Y-10 clips and the extender bars. Two clips go on the steel drip rail and the pads from the towers hold the weight at the top of the curve of the roof. I could haul 200lbs on it with out it being a problem with the rack. CG would be painful on corners... It's bomber. 10 minutes on, 5 minutes off. No drilling! Skis, bikes, lumber...

The SST & Y-clips (& stretch) have been replaced by the Q-towers, Q-clips, and Q-stretch. You'd have to look up what the Y-10 clip has been replaced by in the Q clips.

 

Best information I could find is that the Q38 clip w/ Q-tower replaces the Y10 clip w/ SST 1C tower.

The bars were mounted way back to get the Yakima Rocket Box to be entirely in the roof line of the truck.

Nice thing about a truck that's off roaded and well paid for (yes - I bought the 4Runner NEW) - I drilled...

 

The stretch kit allows you to get almost that far. See the attached picture for an example of what you can do. Not sure if the Q-stretch is the same length as the SST stretch kit or not.

Ditto on the paid for (18 years ago ), but still don't like to drill. Besides the load capacity on the Q-towers (& SST) is much greater than gutter mounts (1A towers).

 

Im looking for a pic of the truck with the roof box on it... you'll see why I had to drill.... It doesnt leak... its sealed up good.

 

I <3 that setup. can still remove the topper and part of the roof rack as a unit, but leave the light bar!


ewong, that light mount bracket is just for the load warrier basket.


I'm in the process of making a light bar from a single Thule crossbar. I had one on one of my lifted subarus, and it was awesome. Thule uses square crossbars, instead of round ones like yakima. simply drill a hole in the bar, and mount the light with some big ol' fender washers. simple, cheap, and quick.

I saved the rear bar from that thing. it should clamp right onto the stock gutters above the cab on the Runner...

and I think I'm going to have to get that yakima track setup for the topper. and I see the landing pads that work with the tracks also work with my factory roof rails on my '92 subaru loyale DD. slap that, and my Load Warrier basket on there. with the spare tire mount. and some spare parts....and hit the trails. or pull the tire off, and throw it in the back of the truck, and pull the topper off for some open-air wheeling!

 

The light bar is a KC one I found in a friends garage. I think they are still available. I am using the landing pads but they go in the permanent mount tracks from Yakima (click the link in my first post) that way I can adjust the bar position by just sliding the mount in the track, or just remove it entirely leaving a completely factory looking track in the roof that is about 1/4" high.
