Just a FYI for future. Late 80''s Jeep Cherokee have a REALLY long roof rack. It starts about 8 inch from the windshield and runs all the way to the gate. there are two styles. One is a flat C channel and that's the one you want. Its nearly identical to the racks they sell at Leer stores.
it is similar to this but the track is a little lower profile.
http://www.a1-autoracks.com/proline-...age-racks.html the tracks are almost 7ft long on the Cherokee. If you are junkyard them bring torx bits. Some years are torx some Philips.

I have used these racks on a couple of vehicles including my suburban with Thread inserts/ rivet nuts. Worked very well. On the fiberglass top you might try using "well plugs". Its a rubber gr omit of sorts with a thread piece in it. As you tighten it pulls the threaded part up and expands the rubber to fill the hole. actually pretty strong set up. GM used them for years to hold mirrors on trucks. make 73-87. Might be able to get them at Leer as well.

$130+ for a light bar? After seeing how they attach, I bet i could make my own for a hell of a lot less, and it would sit lower too.

I think sometime this spring I might get some 2"x1" C-channel and some 1/4" plate steel for the ends and just weld one up. After looking around at pics of the KC bar, i think it would be possible to duplicate their mounting system with something fabricated. I just dont like how tall that bar stands up above the roof

YES

over the doors

There is a "fake" raingutter over the slider windows on the cap, but its fiberglass and not very strong.

It's pretty easy to put those bolt on gutter mounts in the back because, like ewong said, those fiberglass ones over the rear windows are not strong enough.

I'm probably just going to bolt a rack directly too the top of mine. I don't like how most of them sit up so high.
