replaced starter on 90 22re,still no start

ill start at the beginning.was having troubles with starting, usually a couple taps to the starter and it would fire up.last couple times i tried to start id have to run back and forth a couple times tapping the started.when it would start the starter wouldnt disengage for 3 or 4 seconds after starting.so i replaced the starter today.im getting the click behind the dash.but no start.the starter spun a couple times but didnt engage and didnt spin every turn of the key.any ideas???

I would check the positive lead from battery to starter. If it has a bad contact, corrosion or cracked insulation maybe its not passing enough juice to pop the gear out.

Also, did you put a whole new starter in or rebuild the old one? Maybe you got a bum starter since it spins but doesnt engage. The old one probably just had worn out contacts in the solenoid and perhaps the plunger was sticking in the out position. They are cheap and easy to rebuild, so dont chuck it. Replace contacts, clean up the plunger and sell. Or better yet put it back in. The stock one is of better quality than an inexpensive autoparts store starter.

Sounds like a bad starter drive.

the quality of re manned starters has gotten so bad as of late

Then you have new ones made in china that are not much better if not worse.

Then again unless you inspected the ring gear you might have missing teeth that could also cause the same problem of the starter just spinning with out engaging
