replace the 3rd or replace the gears?

Is it easier to replace the gears in an 86 SR5 or would it be easier to just buy used 3rd's in the correct gearing and swap those in? I'm a little concerned about all the pinion depth, crush sleeve stuff that I'm unfamiliar with. The reason I ask is because there is a set of 3rd's in 4.88 for sale (although shipping may be a pain) for 550$ and I'm having a hard time finding new gears in a price that is cheap enough that I can afford to have someone do the gear swap for me.

thanks.

Easier?

Swap out the 3rd. Probably cheaper too.

X2.. easily a 3 beer job..... If you buy NEW you will need gears, spacer, set up kit and a VERY knowledgable person to set them up

Nice! So Dirt do you have any 4.88 thirds for sale also? I think I pmed you about some gear sets but if the thirds are easier and cheaper then I'll go that route.

Well, you have to pull and replace the thirds to swap the gears, so obviously it's easier.

This is THE time to decide if you want locker(s) or not.

NOTE: if you're buying factory 4.88 thirds, they are not regearable down the road.

Yeah I really goofed on asking that without knowing what the heck I was asking. Still new to Toyotas but learning more every day.

Oh that's been decided and since I can install the Aussies without tearing the truck apart I'll have time to learn more.

Why is that? I mean I don't plan on ever going with a different ratio, although I'll probably hang on to my factoy 4.10's just in case.

Thanks for the replies!!

The factory 4.88 3rd member is a little different. I won't go into details but the pinion is offset a little thus your run-of-the-mill r&pinions won't work. You can only use toyota 4.88 gears in them, so you have to get a "new" 3rd member housing to use a different gear ratio.

Buying a used 3rd would be MUCH easier, and probibly cheaper. Just make sure you get one in good shape..you will only make that mistake once!

If I was to get a set of factory 4.88 3rds to replace my 4.10's I wouldn't be able to use the 4cyl 2 pinion lockright in my 4.10 in the 4.88 would I?

No. You need a 6cyl lockright.

The front 7.5" diff out of a v6 with 4.88's is no different than the 4cyl 4.10 right? I'm probably going to pick up a 4.88 front and rear 3rd and want to put lock-rights in each. Too bad I won't be able to use my 4cyl lock-right

Will fit the 4.88 7.5" right?

Yes, the IFS front diff is the same. That locker you posted will fit.
