I just replaced the original engine in my '92 4runner with a Jasper remanufactured engine; it's been quite a while since I had a new engine to break in. My mechanic filled it with Kendall 5W-30 synthetic blend, and wants to change oil and filter at 500 miles. I'm kind of old school when it comes to oil, and wonder if this is the right lube for a 21 year old truck. I am interested in the opinions of others who have experience in this matter.

 

Unless you live in an excessive cold climate area I would use no less than 10w40 weight motor oil in a 22r.

Changing the oil/filter after 500 miles in new engine is very good practice.

Synthetic engine oil is also a very good way to go .

 

Thanks for weighing in, Kiroshu. I used 10W-40 in the engine I just replaced. I'm wondering if thin oil does the job.

 

Thinner oil weights "do the job" based on conditions and manufacturer specs. 5w30 I believe is the thinnest weight oil Toyota recommends for the 22r mainly based on colder climate operating temperatures.

 

I had a Jasper 22re put in my '88 4Runner a few years ago and have about 90,000 miles on it. I didn't do anything special for the break-in, just took it easy for a while. I've been running Castrol GTX 10w-30w and all has been good.

 

usually 5w-30 is good for small displacement or more modern engines. synthetic or conventional...it doesn't matter as long as you stick with one! dont change. stick with one type and stay with it. usually thicker oil is good for for engines that have wear on them due to the fact that thicker oil will keep the pressures up. sounds like you're good to go with what you have.

 

Don't run synthetic oil for the first 5,000 miles. Your rings will never seat and you will always burn oil...only use conventional durning this period.

After the 5,000 mile point, then use what you wish. I used Mobil 1 10W-30 on a rebuild and have had no problems...

 

try a ZDDP additive. have a read at this

 

That or bg M.O.A for breakins.

 

Haven't built any Toyotas yet, but plenty others, with good success.
I like castrol GTX in the crankcase and I add a little Marvel Mystery oil to the first two or three tanks of fuel.
First oil and filter change after 300 to 500 miles. Very important to get the early breakin metal out right away. Then second oil change after 1000 miles (1300-1500 total). Then you're golden.

My engine's just been rebuilt. Now I can go from 30 MPH at ramp to merge at 55MPH (break-in period) all in 5th gear! Shop owner used to race 22RE's offroad and makes sensible recommendation so I think he knows his 22RE, shop has its own machine shop and fabrication business, and got recommendation by officemate so I trust them. However, I would like to what my Yota brothers think, about the following:

• Shop owner advises to use 10W-50 on engine, and
• That it may consume oil at first then get better.

 

I don't think you need to use 50 weight.

 

If he recommends 50 weight, then his tolerances must be a little on the loose side.

I used a 10w-30 conventional oil and was fine.

Remember there needs to be a good balance between flow and pressure. With 50 weight oil, you will have good pressure but not very good flow which may lead to bearing damage...

 

Ummm...what does Jasper specify/recommend?

 

Thank you very much, snobdds. After break-in, I'll change back to 10W-40 (San Diego with weekend trips to Anza-Borrego and San Bernardido County), and watch out for oil consumption, if any.

 

Flow = cooling and lubrication, I vote 5/40 synthetic, Rotella t6.
