Rebuild or Replace?

My toyota still has the stock 22r in it mated to the stock transmisson... it's turning locked 37" boggers with 5.29 gears... it turns them easy.. just doesnt have a lot of torque or power for ripping and shredding deep holes. I want more power... at least 200 horsepower and 200 ft-lbs of torque... is there a cheap and easy way to get this kind of power out of the stock motor? or would it be cheaper to perform an engine swap? and if so what engine should i go with?

well im looking at trying to keep the budget to about about $800.. i know changing the head with a ported and polished 20r head will help. ive got a msd igniton box and blaster 2 coil with the distributer already mounted up and a single flowmaster 40 series muffler and exhaust im looking into getting a weber carb too. also some gibson or hooker headers. I've heard about a website called LC engineering that provides a lot of performance parts for the 22r. but other than all that im not sure where else i can go. im guessing a new cam wouldnt hurt either. Any other ideas?

No way you are gonna get a 22r to pump out that kinda power without dropping some serious cash. Forced induction is a must!

Just pull the 22r out and swap in a different motor.

I'd say sell the 22r and use that money towards another engine, maybe a small block chevy. That's the best route.

You'll lose the stability and reliability of the 22r, but you'll gain some speed and HP with the small block.

200HP out of a 22r (or 22re even) is not an easy nor cheap quest. 140HP is about the most you can get for cheap. After that, you're in for about $500 for each 25HP. If you stick with naturally aspirated, your torque and HP bands move around quite a bit and you end up shooting yourself in the foot. No easy nor cheap way to get 200HP and be 'streetable' on air. Turbo's and supercharging can overcome some of that but even then you're in for thousands of dollars for the parts and fuel / ignition management.

If you're a purist, it's possible to coax that horsepower out of a 22r/re, but you'd still be 'pure' swapping in a higher rated Toyota engine. The 5VZE is a candidate as are the 5/6/7M engines.

Well form the sound of it an engine swap is the best choice. what would be the easiest and most affordable option though? i've read several people using the 4.3 Vortec from old s10 and blazer models. will that bolt into the factory motor mounts? cause thats the one thing im trying to avoid. id like to keep to factory motor mount placement... as for the actual motor mounts themselves, i have no problem beefing them up or replacing them with solid mounts. anyone got any ideas?

2.7 will bolt right up from what I have been lead to believe but you need the harness and ecu as well. As for better power it doe's have a little more but not to sure you can get the 200 hp any easier then with the 22r.

5vzf 3.4 is next in line that comes to mind again harness and ecu needed you can get more power stock is 190 iirc so you are right there in the 200 hp range but you need a tranny to match it was well and tranny/motor mounts need to be replaced.

do some searching before you do more question asking, there are tons of engine swaps available for our toys. 4.3l v6 GM engines are popular, so are 350 V8s, but the 3.4l v6 from the 95+ toyota trucks (otherwise known as the 5vze) is an even more popular swap. Some even take the 4.0l v8 out of lexus gs400s and so on. In no way is an engine swap 'easy' or 'cheap', when you read those, it's a matter of speaking relatively. Most of the time, you should expect to pay somewhere around 4-7 grand to have a full 3.4 liter v6 installed. Not exactly an investment, but the grin-factor is huge. Most of the time, that's the cheapest swap to do, and the 5vz are the most reliable swapping-in engines in that list. Hell, you can even put a TRD supercharger on it when you're done if you need more power. If you want the cheapest and easiest way possible, get a rebuilt 22re and make sure your gearing is appropriate for your tire size... and there isnt a thing in the world that'll stop you. If you arent looking to spend at least a few thousand dollars on the cheapest possible engine swaps, just keep it as is.
