Rebuild Gone Wrong?
Hi Ya'all
I just finished my first engine rebuild on my 94 toyota 4x4,
Now it won't start,
I have replaced the starter and battery
When i turn the key it makes 1 loud click.
Just 1 and there is a high pitch wine (i think it is a fuel pump)
Could this be a bad ground?
It seems to be acting like the engine is seized but it is not if i grab a socket wrench and it spins just fine.
Some one HELP!!!!!

Sounds like it could be a starter or ground issue. Double check your power and grounds.
Grounds: one at power steering pump bracket, one at upper and lower intake mount, one at back of head in drivers side , one from battery to block , an one from battery to body.
Also you can try to jump the starter with a screwdriver while the ignition is on. It's Kind I sketchy but you can see if the starter is operating or not.

It does not sound like a spinning wine like the motor is spinning, How could it not contact the fly wheel?
It sounds like a motor straining...
I think grounds may be a problem there are currently only 1 ground wire on the block... I will fix that then see if that fixes my problem...
so either i have a problem other than the starter or i got a defective starter...

starter doesnt pop the gear out to contact the flywheel. or possibly.....you just screwed it up. but your response seems confident that isnt the problem. try getting more grounds on that engine. i take it the one ground you put on was the big one that goes to the negative side of the battery?

Ok so i re-did the grounds and still no change. Some quick facts: batt voltage at 12.3 one loud click from the starter
Aso using a torque wrench i discovered that it takes 40 ft. Lbs to crank the engine over whithe the tranny in neutral.
Any ideas?

40 lbs is pretty close if you are reaching compression on one of the cylinders. But turning the crank over 2 rotations you should feel 4 compression strokes.
If you are not sure about the grounds you can voltage drop them, youtube has some great video's on voltage drop testing.

Ok since this is a rebuilt with a first start take the spark plugs out imediatly.
You do not want the engine to fire utill you have oil pressure.
The plugs out will also make the engine much easier to turn over.
Sounds like theirs more going on here though.

My new to me 93 pickup does this all the time. The whining you here is the fuel pump. As soon as u release the key the whining stops. The click you here is the starter. My truck does it constantly. I finally changed my starter with another old used one I had laying around. My truck cranks more often now but I still have this accassional click problem.... Buy a new starter and you will be fixed. Ima buy a new one this payday

Oh yeah by the way...... The more it clicks the more fuel your pouring into your engine..... Trust me I flooded my truck out really bad trying to get it to start one day.
Most people doesn't realize that EFI will flood itself lol

Jumper FP to B+ in the diagnostic connector. Turn key to "ON". THAT is the sound of the fuel pump. (And if more of a whine than a whir or a purr, then the pump is on its last legs.)
Put the voltmeter on the battery, and watch it when someone turns the key to START. Does it stay at 12.3? Then you're not connected to the Starter (either the ground or the positive). Does it drop to 10v or less? Your battery is not charged enough, or is otherwise failing. (12.3 is pretty low for a charged battery)
Good luck!

Quick update i did aa voltage drop and had .2 volts of drop on each side. Jumped it nothing.
my dad and brother helped md pop start it and it ran under its own power only on 3 or less cylinders i need new wires but the engine ran (barely) for a few minutes and the stater still the same. I am so happy the truck ran!!!!!!!!!
