maybe an exhuast leak? Try checking your engine oil level too. A good bet for noises like this would be to get a stethescope and probe around different areas of the eingine compartment until you find the source of the noise. Good luck!

Does it do it at a certain RPM, increase with an increase in RPM?

Could be the fan hitting it's shroud or an exhaust leak or something worse. Who knows need more details.

I know from experience a leak at the exhaust manifold can sound like a rattle.

Sounds like the reed valve..they can make a racket when bad..it is on the passenger side near the firewall..you can pull off the vacuum hose on the valve to see if the noise stops. The hose that goes from the air filter to the metal pipe on top of the manifold can be removed too to see if the noise goes away( the bigger of the 2 hoses they are together..NOT THE BIG FAT AIR INTAKE HOSE).If it does replace or bypass the valve...hope this is your problem.

This wouldn't explain the bogging down, but my '94 V6 makes a similiar type noise when its cold.

Sounds like a bad bearing.....I find out when I turn ON the A/C the noise goes away. Assuming its a bearing inside the A/C compressor, however I haven't pursued fixing it do to costs & it only does it in winter months.

Just my $.02

Weird, I have a ticking noise when its cold (sounds like speedo cable), but I looked behind dash & I have electronic speedo unit I guess. My ticking noise happens regardless of engine RPM so I think its something in the front end or dash.

If it ALWAYS goes away when A/C is on, then I would dig into that & see if its worth it replace bearing inside compressor. I think when I looked into it, the part/labor was almost not worth it.

i had what sounded like a very faint rattle at certain times when I first bought my 89 v6 5spd. It was a bad bearing if I recall, I believe the timing belt idler pulley bearing.

Have you tried yota krazys stethescope idea? Have someone adjust throttle/play with clutch and try and pinpoint an area where it's coming from.
