Radiator fan has stopped kicking in

I have a 91 4runner, latley while i've been out wheeling its been over heating like a mother i looked at the fan and it isn't kicking in. it goes full force when i start the truck, but once that is done it doesn't kick in again.

just had the engine rebuilt about 9000km ago, i'm not blowing white smoke, it just runs hot when i'm wheeling. any ideas on what makes the fan actually kick in, or any ways to check whats wrong with it

cheers

I may be wrong, but if the fan isn't turning then you're clutch has probably seized up and is due for replacement.

when the engine starts it turns just fine, after about 20 seconds or so... it just spins, but not with any force. almost like its just spinning because of the engine... if that makes any sense

Just to clarify, we are not talking about the flywheel clutch that you disengage with your left foot, but the clutch that the fan bolts to.

Here's a picture.

Definitely get that fixed ASAP, esp. if you have the 3.0 V6. You don't wanna get those baby's hot. Maybe time for electric fan mod?

Try pulling the fan and clutch out and have a look at the center of the bi-metal spring assembly. Sometimes the shaft that the spring turns gets stuck and that prevents the internal valving from changing to lock the clutch up. My '85 did that and I was able to free the shaft by gently turning it with a pair of pliers.

I have the problem but in reverse. Fan runs all the time, cool wooshing noise on revs but robbing fuel and every little horsie power is needed. I like the electric idea. Anyone got a link to instructions/parts?

Well, you might want to figure out why its staying on. Is the clutch done or are you having cooling problems?

Temp guage is staying nice and low. I am able to manually move the fan after everything has cooled down, not freewheeling but it does move. Since the only harm now is a mile per gallon I'll wait and see what happens in the fall. This is the first summer with the truck and it is TEXAS.

You could try rebuilding the fan clutch or just get a new one. I replaced my original clutch with a new Aisin unit from Toyota about 6 years ago and saw nearly a 1 MPG mileage improvement. The old clutch was just getting too stiff and not releasing. I figured it would make a good trail spare.
