Radiator fan has stopped kicking in
I have a 91 4runner, latley while i've been out wheeling its been over heating like a mother
i looked at the fan and it isn't kicking in. it goes full force when i start the truck, but once that is done it doesn't kick in again.
just had the engine rebuilt about 9000km ago, i'm not blowing white smoke, it just runs hot when i'm wheeling. any ideas on what makes the fan actually kick in, or any ways to check whats wrong with it
cheers

when the engine starts it turns just fine, after about 20 seconds or so... it just spins, but not with any force. almost like its just spinning because of the engine... if that makes any sense

if theres a junkyard they will have a ford taur or lincoln with the electric fan you want!! i got a fan clutch on ebay with the fan blade for 5 bucks plus shipping..turns out it was just a loose belt in my case so now i have a trail spare

Try pulling the fan and clutch out and have a look at the center of the bi-metal spring assembly. Sometimes the shaft that the spring turns gets stuck and that prevents the internal valving from changing to lock the clutch up. My '85 did that and I was able to free the shaft by gently turning it with a pair of pliers.

Temp guage is staying nice and low. I am able to manually move the fan after everything has cooled down, not freewheeling but it does move. Since the only harm now is a mile per gallon I'll wait and see what happens in the fall. This is the first summer with the truck and it is TEXAS.

You could try rebuilding the fan clutch or just get a new one. I replaced my original clutch with a new Aisin unit from Toyota about 6 years ago and saw nearly a 1 MPG mileage improvement. The old clutch was just getting too stiff and not releasing. I figured it would make a good trail spare.
