I have been searching, but I cannot seem to find any solid recommendations on window regulator brands. All I can find is that everything is basically garbage except for OEM, which is about $90. Does anyone know of a quality brand for a fairly reasonable price? I would really like to know if Toyota rebadges a different brand of regulator.

From my research in the past, it appears they rebadge AISIN brake and clutch parts, Sankei ball joints, and I believe Nippondenso ignition components. It is probably more like they are contracting with those companies to make certain parts as opposed to "rebadging" parts.

The driver's side regulator on my '88 pickup still works, but it is just getting worn. It has a lot of slop in it and it makes a lot of noises rolling up and down. I am planning on sealing the door for a stereo system upgrade and I do not want to have to get back in there anytime soon. I also plan on lubing the rails with silicone as a few people have suggested on here.

I went to the yard and found a really good one for cheap, came off of a truck with ac so I figured that would be the best option due to the window might not be used as much, member on here named Mighty Mouse has a thread for a toyota yard on here, might give it a search and see what he's got or post in the wanted section and see what results you get.

Good luck it's worth it, mine was all sloppy and now I replaced it I really don't even want power windows anymore due to how much easier it is to roll up and down

 

There are definitely a lot of companies that make aftermarket parts, but I have always understood that if you get something like a clutch from Toyota, it will be in a Toyota labeled box, but it is actually an AISIN manufactured clutch. Toyota would not want to use cheap parts and sell them as their own, so they use companies they trust to make quality parts. I am just not sure if Toyota manufactures their own window regulators, or if they use another company for them. Knowing which companies they use is a great way to basically get the same OEM part for half price or less.

If I cannot get a quality new one then a junk yard might be worth a look. Good point about the A/C. Occasionally I have also seen Toyota motorhomes there that have very low miles but the motorhome part is trashed. Those are always great sources for low mileage pickup parts.

 

Used parts should be fine, but you might have to install it to know if it's OK. With new, you will 99.99% not have to install twice. That's worth something. The regulators for your 88 and before trucks used to cost way less just a few years ago....like $45 or so. They're probably getting low on stock.
Btw, Aisin and Nippondenso are OEM for toyota.

 

You are right, I too have noticed that some parts are either getting more expensive or no longer available through Toyota. Even some aftermarket manufacturers are doing the same thing. It would be nice to know when they are going to quit making a part or significantly raise the price so I could stock up! I would like to see a catalog similar to LMC Truck for Toyota pickups/4Runners, but to my knowledge nothing like that exists.

I just bought an OEM regulator off of eBay for cheaper than the dealer as it appears to be new old stock. I will see if there are any markings suggesting that someone else besides Toyota manufactures it when I get it.

 

You're talking a manual regulator?
It's not a critical (safety or drivetrain) part, and mine's a manual, so I used after-market such as this:

I put a beck arnley one in my truck works great so far window goes up and down smoothly

 

I put a Dorman on the passenger side about a year ago and it seems to work smoothly so far. If I remember right, it was not as quality appearing as stock (I think it had a plastic gear), and some reviews I read confirmed my findings, so I wanted to get something more solid for the driver's side before I seal up the doors.

I did not seen any Beck/Arnley window regulators when I was searching. Where did you buy it? I have almost always been happy with Beck/Arnley. Sometimes I have found they rebadge the OEM brands and sell them for way cheaper.

 

i bought in bc from lordco local auto part store its good quality and i think i paid about 45 bucks for it

 

I put a aftermarket regulator that lasted about 2 years in a pinch. It wasn't worth it to go back in and replace again 2 years later. I went OEM and fully expect it to last another 25 years.

I got my NOS OEM regulator in the mail, and it is AISIN brand. It looks like it is new, but probably been on a shelf for 15 or 20 years, so the dealer might sell a different brand now if AISIN does not not make them anymore. I would think that there is a good chance Beck/Arnely would package an AISIN regulator, but I cannot seem to find that brand anywhere. The Lordco site does not have anywhere to search for parts. All of the other sites, including Rockauto, do not have any Beck/Arnley regulators. If anyone knows who sells Beck/Arnley regulators here in the USA I would appreciate the input.

 

lots of trash out there, be careful. this is the best one I've found that's not toyota/aisin. decent price. I've had 2 of the "doorman" variety in my 89 pickup and they just don't hold up.

 

I have never heard of that brand but I am glad that it worked out for you.

When ever I hear the word "Dorman".........

Their parts are low quality in general.
