Power steering pump... question
Hey everybody,
I had taken my 4Runner to the dealer I bought it from to replace the fan bracket, I didn't have alot of engine experience yet. I noticed that since I got it back there has been an insainly large power steering pump leak. I've been going through at least 1 bottle of fluid every week. I can't find right where it is leaking from but drips from right under the pump itself. I was wondering if any of you had the same problem and if so where you found that the leak was coming from?
Zach

i'm having this same problem since i flushed my power steering fluid, just not as bad. What i'd do is spray the area out with a hose so you can see where exactly it's coming from. most likely it's coming from the hose coming out of the pump, because that's the high pressure line. see what you can do about finding where the leak is coming from and then go from there. it maybe be a simple fix and all you'll need to do is replace a hose clamp.

Yeah mine leaked too. I replaced all the o-rings and seals because I couldn't tell which one was leaking:

I had to replace the hose that goes from the fluid cannister down to the pump. Mine was checked really bad and the fluid was squirting out. It would run towards the front of the truck and drip off my driver's side tow hook. So far it looks like replacing that hose has fixed it.

I can turn my wheels all the way to the left and my truck shoots fluid from somewhere , seems to be worse backing up.. I haven't found the problem yet.. Its not much because it very seldom needs any , but smoke comes from under the hood when does do it.. I just try not to turn it all the way.. When it warms up some i will locate the problem

the p/s pump isnt all that difficult to check. more than likely, its going to be a hose or an 'o' ring. loosen the belt, undo some bolts and take the thing to the bench. replace the 'o' rings and the hose, reassemble, top up the fluid and check for leaks.
you already know what causes it to leak, test it out and you will know if your repair was successful.
keep us posted.

alright. that sounds easy enough. removing the pump isn't something that i normally would do cause i wouldn't want to break anything. however, i just started my engine semester at tech school and have already taken off several p/s pumps. if i'm correct, you don't have to mess with any timing belt covers right?

Leak is more than likely coming from the rear round cover o-ring at the back of the pump. We install a complete seal kit for these. Common w ht age/miles. Kit is about $35, and the ones for 90-94 is the same, and for some reason, the 95 kit is different. We stock the kit and its not too tough to do.

thanks for the help so far. i went out about 10 minutes ago with a blue flash light that i find very helpfull with turning liquid into bright colors at night. it is coming from the back of the pump near that o-ring. is this something that can be replaced without taking the pump out of the vehicle? also if removal of the pump is neccesary, what things do i need to do (i know p/s pumps have alot of pressure and that i'll probably need to bleed the brakes too)?

The hardest part of the rebuild can be removing the pump pulley as they can get rusted in place pretty good. I heard one guy tried to use a gear puller and bent the pulley so don't do that. I got mine off ok but I don't have much of a rust problem.

You have the 3.0?
I'm not familiar with the 3vze at all so i dont know how the pump fastens.
On the 22R,E, TEC whatever.. 22 engine the pump is held in with 4 bolts underneath the Distributor.
12mm to loosen the tensioner pulley and a 19mm to release the locking nut (that keeps the pulley tight to the bracket it fastens to).
release the belt, take it off, 14mm bolts holding the PS to the bracket, take the hoses off... your gonna lose fluid so get a rag handy. I guess I'd just try and put them higher than the resevoir so it doesnt drain out.
pull it PS out.
