Hello all, I recently purchased a 1995 4Runner as a project truck. I have developed a squeel and have trouble with steering wheel turning while in low speed. Once speed increases turning is fine. Power steering pump is full but belt is really loose. I tried moving pump to help tighten belt but that doesn't get it tight enough. Is there another method to tighten it since it has no tensioner?

 

My truck had the same problem till I got a OEM belt. It seemed like the belts from the local auto parts stores were ether a little loose or a little tight.

 

Thanks for the reply I have looked online for OEM belts and see there is some very slight variance in length. The part number that on there now is 48-3/8" but there is another that says it is OEM replacement that is 48". I may have to purchase both and send the wrong one back.

 

Try looking up your application on the belt manufacturers site.

I'm not a fan of Dayco or Goodyear. Gates are so so.
I think Mitsuboshi supplies the OEM power steering and AC belts.

Bando has a pretty good reputation and I believe they supply the OEM belt for the 22re alternator/water pump.

I looked my application up on Bando's website and ordered that belt. When newly installed the alternator sits right in the middle of the adjustment slot as it should.
After the first day of driving I needed to slightly readjust it but that's normal. It hasn't seemed to stretch any more than that.

 

There is a adjustment on the idler pulley to adjust belt tension.

Loosen the nut on the front of the pulley turn the bolt behind the pulley .

look you will see it I use A 12mm deep socket and air ratchet.

 

I think that's the 22re. I assume he has the 3VZE, as he talked about moving the pump (which is how one tightens the PS belt on a 3VZE.)

 

Yes I have the 3VZE motor. There is no idler pulley for the PS belt. I am going to do some more checking and see if an OEM replacement helps.

The "stock per the parts store" is Gates P# 9480 and is 48 3/8" long. The counter guy suggested 9465 at 46 7/8" but couldn't get it over the pullys. quick google search brought me to gates belts list HERE (its a big list, page 11 right column) So I have a few other options to try.

Gates P# 9476 and is 47 15/16 " long. Its a "hd" belt what ever that really means, but it fit perfect, and no more squeek.
