i posted months ago, but i just beat my 22re's best gas mileage that my brother set 2 1/2 years ago. i drove from Lafayette, Colorado, to Farmington, New Mexico yesterday. and i initially calculated my mileage to be 31.47 miles per gallon, but my trip odometer read 378.2 miles (the trip from my apt. parking lot in NM to My parents Driveway In CO Is 395.8 miles.) it dawned on me today that my 22re is running larger tires, so i took the 395.8 i got from my tacoma whick is running stock tires, and substituted it for my trip odometer distance and i calulated 33.36 miles per gallon.

Believe it or not, when I moved from nor cal to new mexico, two tanks I got 27.5 MPG. I had a roof rack, bike rack on the trailer hitch, and had me my dog and about 600-800 lbs of my stuff in the back.

It was mostly in california on the flat open highways, but the worst I got was 17 on the brutal hills going to flagstaff.

drove to colorado this weekend, averaged 22 mpg ranging from 85mph to 55 irradically. had two grown men and three dogs and the truck loaded down again.

I am impressed. Way better than the 13 to 14 when I had 35's

That's great MPG's. Do you know your gear ratio? It sounds like your taller tires may have increased your MPG ???

MMMMM ok so you divided 395.5 by how many gallons in tank?

33.36 MPG... Wow.. You have a 14gal tank right? So you used less than 12 gallons of gas for that whole trip?

Not calling you a liar or anything at all, just wanna figure out how you got 33mpg in that thing... Just hard for me to believe unless you did some serious tinkering... Only due to the fact that your truck is basically stock aside from an air filter and a MSD coil, and a homemade exhaust... Do you have any other major mods? Have you ever touched the motor? Adjust your timing or anything like that?

Please post something up so maybe some of us can try to get better mileage. How fast were you driving? ~temp outside? Anything... I am trying to get into the 20+mpg club with my 33x12.5's on stock gearing. Even though i think I will pick up significant power and MPG's with the exhaust going on it (none now) and the intake /batt swap supra afm mod. I would love 21-22MPG's consistent on my truck after i do that.. But, if there is some crazy way to get higher than that.. I wanna know! You being a pickup with 2wd instead of a 4runner with 4wd shouldn't make that big of a difference. unless those new truck 22re's are really that much more efficient...

It fluctuates based on traffic conditions, speed, and if I go in the dirt. The 25 mpg run was 55-60 mph on the highway at night. Pretty ideal conditions. Usually I drive 55-60 on the highway but sometimes I drive faster. If I drive around town more, the mileage drops. I'm usually getting 18-20, more if the conditions are right.

My 4runner is the same way. I usually get 19-20 mpg, but if I do an all highway tank at 55, I can get 23-24 mpg. Speed really makes a huge difference.

I need to start driving slower then. yeah, these bricks on wheels aren't very aerodynamic and i could see how that could affect it alot.. I will try and keep it around 65 and see how that goes. Totally makes sense. Makes me think I could get very close to the same results!

=)

I should also mention that my 86 is an automatic and it robs a lot of power. If I had a stick, I think I would see 22 mpg consistantly.

the 2wd/4wd difference is huge. i was squeaking out 30 out of my 80 2wd. then pulled the motor out and put it in my 81 4wd and i could never break 24. my 2wd weighed in at about 2400 with gas and me in it, the 4wd came in at about 3300 with gas and me in it. that has a lot to do with it. i was happy to be consistently in the low 20's in the 4wd but now i have diesel power and got 32.3 last tank!!!!!

dont really believe it but i calculated 130miles on a quarter of my 17 gal tank which means i got 30mpg on my trip..? with 4:10s and 33's

Start with full tank. drive to destination or until empty tank. Miles Driven/gallons to fill your tank = MPG. the most accurate test is to fill the tank and drive until you are empty. that gives you a bigger average range instead of just testing 1/4 tanks of fuel. my guage on my 81 stays at F forever it seems, then as it gets further down the guage, the faster it drops. so assuming that 1/4 tank is 4.25 gal is just that; an assumption

Don't mean to be surly, but i am an auto technician and i speak in nothing but provable fact all day. happy driving!

Yeah, the great air space beneath these trucks is probably the largest single factor. Then weight, general lack of aerodynamics including bull bars, lights, roof racks, snorkel and all manor of general 4x4 bolt-on ensembles.

Perhaps some sort of highway aero package? They'd look like freight trains
