You will loose speed going up hills. I was able to stay in fifth most of the time and downshift into forth on some hills. Try it out, you'll be amazed at how much better gas mileage you'll get when you drive your vehicle just right.
Hypermiling is a good way to get a "Slow" ticket, or get rear ended. ^^^^^Previous post nailed it. There is being light on the throttle, and keeping the RPMS in the most efficient part of the power band, but then there are those who take it too far. Someone in a VW rabbit behind me in traffic would stop and start the engine traffic, so I would let of the brakes, move 10 inches (they would start it), then I would stop (and they would turn the engine off). I thought it was funny, as it probably uses more fuel to start and stop an engine than it does to let it idle.

92 3.0 4Runner 4.56's 28 inch tires

Bought truck with 197,000 with new headgasket etc..

14 mpg city 15 highway

Added dynomax catback and CAI

15 mpg city 15 mph highway at 70-74

Hollowed cat, Seafoamed engine

15 mph city, 15 mpg highway

No matter what i do, no better milage, just claybared it and waxed it, as well as removed the stripe from the side, we'll see if my milage goes up from that, cause all my other tricks aren't working;-)

Drafting trucks can also screw with the airflow into the radiator, causing your cooling fan to kick on (at highway RPMs) -- bye-bye good mpg.

I recently put a 4' BDS IFS suspension lift and changed to 4.88 gears with 33' Mickey Thompson tires and 17' rims with a KN air filter. Filled the gas tank up and got 265 miles per tank and calculated it out to 19.855 miles per gallon. I was getting 21 before the change and thought I was going to get much less so I was happy with this MPG. I love the way it drives and it is fun turning heads while looking down on other cars. Reading other posts I am amazed that I am getting this cus it looks as if others aren't getting close to this. Is anyone using the Tornado cus I heard this will help as well?

I just put some very slightly taller(just 1/2") 205/75-R14 BFG Radial Long Trail T/A tires on my 2wd yesterday and will be driving a few hundred miles next weekend, so I'll see how the economy was effected. Yes, I know it will throw off the odometer; I am going to use GPS as well for comparison. Hopefully I won't have the same 25mph headwind as last time.

I put a new O2 sensor on my 91 4wd 22re last weekend, and it's saved me a quarter of a tank this week

lol, I have yet to get any real-world numbers though

I only get about 17 MPG on my 88 4runner with a 22RE. I roll on 30" BFGoddrich ATs.

I noticed that it does not matter if I cruise at 60 or drive at 80MPH, I always get the same mileage. I changed my o2 sensor, dropped in a K&N, new exhaust/cat/headers, and still no changes in MPG! I would hope to be able to get at least 20MPG, but I have not been able to improve my mileage.

If it's any consolation, you're likely making more power without a reduction in fuel economy, so it's still a "win" situation.

Dang, some of these numbers are crazy for v6s....I get like 12 mpg in city but ive got a 350 v8, running the stock 4.10's and 33 inch tires. Mileage "improves" to about 18 on the highway. The 350 is smooooooth too. And i chirp the tires when it shifts into second if I get on it

Well, I adjusted my TPS because it was off and readjusted my ignition timing and reset my ECU. I decided to recheck my gas mileage to see if I could beat my last record of 30.75 MPG with my 1988 4WD 22RE Toyota Pickup. I aired up my tires to 50psi and completely topped off my gas tank and drove exactly 100 miles. The road I drove on was a 10 mile stretch where the hills were pretty mild and almost no traffic. I would go back and forth on this road until I reached 100 miles. I was cruising between 45-50mph and was able to stay in fifth most of the time. I then topped off my tank at the same pump and I used about 3.5 gallons for the 100 miles which is 28.4 MPG. Even after driving 100 miles my gas gauge needle was still slightly above the full line. I was hopping for 31MPG but I think atmospheric conditions were less then ideal (50 degrees and 70% humidity) at least there was no wind. I also rechecked the accuracy of my speedometer by holding my truck at 60mph and timing how long it takes to go from one mile marker to the next. Every time it was exactly 1:00 +/- .1 second.

So during my last test I got 28.4MPG and the test before was 30.75MPG. Next year I'll try again when the weather is perfect and hopefully I can get over 31MPG. I normally don't drive like this so usually I only get like 20MPG with 28psi in my tires. It's amazing how much effect your driving technique has on gas mileage. Also at 45mph in fifth, I barely have to touch the gas pedal and the truck just coasts along great, but anything over 55mph the old 22RE has to work at it.

Stock tires, Michelin LTX, basically a stock 4runner. 260,000 on it now................ with a new timing chain, oil and water pump at 220,000km.

City driving 460-80 km per tank

Highway driving flat out to home town gass light comes on at 570km per tank @100 to 110 KM/Hr speed.

Stock Origional 22RE
94 4runner SR5 4Cyl Auto 4WD
Correct cold tire pressure.

I forgot to mention, it doesn't run on gasoline, it run's on children's tears...
