possible starter problem?

I noticed my truck turning over a little slowly the last week when trying to start. Then 2 days ago it wouldnt turn over at all. I thought battery was possibly run down. I charged the battery and cleaned cables. Then the truck started great. That lasted one day.

This morning coming to work. The truck started at home(turned over slowly).
I stopped to get gas. Then the truck would not start. Wouldnt turn over at all.

I tried to jump start it nothing still. I have lights and radio so I think the battery is ok. I finally got a couple of guys to give me a push and made it to work.

Do you think this could be a starter problem??

its a 94 truck with 22RE and 5 speed.

do u get one click and thats it? or a bunch of clicks and see some of the dash lights going on and off? if its one click, its def ur starter contacts, cost u $15 if u rebuild it urself, a piece of cake, even i could do it. if the latter, its most likely ur battery.

I replaced the contacts in the starter. The truck would still not turn over.
I checked the voltage at the battery 12.5 volts.
I was checking the fuses under the hood.(SHould have left them alone)
I tried to pull out the big square fuse that is labeled 80 ALT.
I ended up cracking it. I am not sure what this does????
I went and got a new starter. I hooked it up and the truck turns over now but it will not start. I have spark and I smell fuel and can hear the pump running.

is it the cracked fuse or something else???

Thanks

I would venture a guess that the 80 amp was your alternator fuse and if it is broken, that would explain why it won't start...

is this a dealer only item? and how much (dollar wise) am I gonna hate myself for trying to pull that fuse out?

That brings up the next question ..how do you pull that fuse out?

I tried pulling by hand. The I tried to pull with pliers ...thats when I broke it.

I just called the dealer. That fuse has 2 small screws on the bottom that hold it in place. Explains why I couldn't just pull it out. The cost is 10 bucks. I guess I have made more costly mistakes before...still stings a little though.

Lucky You! I've learned the hard way (often) that if you have to force something, you need to stop what you're doing and find more information!

I will find out how lucky I am when I get home tonight. If this fuses fixes the problem I will be happy. If it doesn't I will take a hammer to the truck : P

Maybe try a screwdriver this time - JK

Have you had the battery load tested - just because it says 12.5 with a voltmeater - that isn't what it will be under load & doesn't show the amerage draw available. A lot of shops will test it for free. If you able to get a push start & drive then your alternator is probably OK.

yep..if it weren't for bad luck..I would have no luck at all.... : )

If I were lucky the contacts would have fixed it and I wouldnt have had to take the starter off 4 times.

All in all though I am happy it is done... : )

Did you buy a new whole new starter? Does the starter have the selinoid on it or is the selinoid seperate from the starter. My truck did this today and seems like a problem that I have had before with selinoids on Fords. How much was the starter?
Thanks
