urgent tire question--size

I have a 1991 22re, dlx cab, 2wd, pickup. The OEM tire size is listed as 195/70/14 and I currently have 215/70/14 tires installed. I'm sure the salesman told me why this was ok-but I have forgotten and I need to buy new tires and costco only has bf goodrich tires in this size or I can get the x-radial in 195/70/14 on sale.

Also, what is opinion of bfgoodrich tires

Thanks.

BFG are good but pricey. Try www.epinions.com for a good cross-section of consumer comments.

A small change in tire size like that will not appreciabley change anything but minor increase in actual -vs- speedometer speed. If you go up two sizes in diameter, you could safely go down to a 65 series tire with @ same diameter overall as your original. (i.e., 195/70 is @ same diameter as 215/65). The first number is the tire width in millimeters; the second is the percentage of the width that represents the height of the tire (rim to tread).

Example:

215 mm (tire width) x 65% = 139.75 mm (tire height)
195 mm (tire width) x 70% = 136.50 mm (tire height)

Sorry, the original oem tires were listed as 195/75/r14

Could I get a 205/75r/14 size tire

Using the above formula, a 205/70 will give you a tire height of 143.50 mm. Since OEM 195/70 = 136.50 mm height, that would give you effective increase in height of 7 mm, which equates to @ 3/8". A 3/8 increase is not that much and certainly won't equate to much difference in the speedometer.

A 205/65 would give you more tread on the road (wider) and a very tiny decrease in diameter & height (133.25 mm)

A 225/60 would give you almost a perfect diameter match with OEM while supplying a wider tread to the road (135 mm) What width are your wheels?

Depends on what you want. there are a lot of options.

in other words, yes you can run that tire w/virtually no change in speedo, gas mileage, etc

I would personally go with the 205/70 instead. More tread on the road and @ same diameter.

OEM = 146.25 mm height
205/70 = 143.50 height
