You should be OK as long as you get ALL of the bolts out of the cover. There is one under the distriubutor gear that you can't really see unless you remove the distributor and clear out the oil that settles there.
I'm assumuing that is the one you are referring to. Also loosen or remove the oil pan bolts. Then just be very careful. You could always remove the head completely but that kinda sucks unless you're doing a rebuild anyway.

when i got the engine in question its timing cover had a crack from the bolt under the distributor gear. when i swaped that engine into new body I used another timing cover. that cover produced an identical smiley face crack just under the cast knob, on the timing cover, that the bolt under the distributor gear sets into?
Any ideas? Does anyone know what the torque spec is on that bolt?
