portable OBA

A while back there was a thread on here about an auto parts place selling a portable air system for cheap and some folks had bought it to mount under the hood. It had clips to attach to the battery instead of the usual plug into the cig lighter. I tried seaching but if you type in OBA or air on the search menu there are hundreds of posts.

Anyone remember this one?

I think you're referring to the ubiquitos MV-50 compressor threads.

I have that one as a backup to my Powertank should it ever run dry.
Bought is via Amazon I believe.
There is a thread about it here somewhere.

Found it

That's the one guys thanks! I think I have enough room to mount it in the engine compartment so it doesn't clutter up the limited cargo area.

Harbor Freight has a cheap one like that too. I can't vouch for it though as I never got around to getting one. I planned on it but I accidentally bought a Viair 380c.

It would be nice to have one as a backup though...

I bought that one recently, it sits behind the seat in its case for the moment. I tried it out once in the garage. Doesn't seem bad for the $50 I paid for it.

I'm planning on getting a tank and fittings for it soon.

If you don't mind me asking..... what did you pay for it? How often do you use it and how well does it work? I don't mind dropping good money on good products but am unsure how much I really want to spend on something that I may only use 10 times a year.

Total price for the whole OBA system (tank, lines, valves and compressor) was $300, which is about $50 less than a OBA system using a electric pump. It will inflate tires much faster. Electrics pump tires brutally slow.

The new ARB compressor CKMA12 is nice too. It is literally twice as fast as the old one I had (same one featured in the Parks Offroad writeup)

I bought a MF1040 off of ebay - it works well. Not as good as the 1050, but for $30 Cnd I cannot complain. Also I'm going to be running 2x2.5 gallon tanks from my old compressor for my OBA system.

I bought it in an air kit from Seige Engineering on ebay. Unfortunately, they aren't selling viair, or much of anything anymore. I paid $249 for the pump and tank, with all necessary fittings and tubing. It will fill the 3 gallon air tank in a few minutes. It's a nice unit.

Btw, I opted not to use the 3/8" tubing they sent and used this nice, bright green 1/2" tubing instead. That's why it looks kind of ghetto. I wanted optimum flow for the horn.

No, I do not. That said, there is someone on Pirate BB that has a York compressor with factory AC>

I'll look into that.

Currently Budbuilt has the bracket for attaching a York allong side the factory A/C on hold pending some adjustments. If it comes out soon I'll look deeper into the York conversion.

I had a york on my 72' FJ - I'd squeeze one under my hood if I could in a heartbeat. Currently I have the harbor freight pos - Its like going from a 50 inch plasma HD back to a 13 inch black and white with turn the channel knobs and rabbit ears with tin foil....

Why did I sell my FJ's?

just wondering, and since it kinda on subject, how hard do you guys think that it would be to convert your factory toyota A/C into a compressor? i mean, if you can do it with a york, i imagine that the toyota would work too...

and i only ask because my a/c system costs too much to recharge, and i havent had it for 2 years, so i dont need it now...

It would probably be really easy. Then all you'd have to do is turn it on via the factory switch and there you go. The only two issues I can think of is length of time to fill a larger tire with that little compressor (I don't know what the cfm's are on the factory unit) and the oiling issue. Most ac compressors use the freon to keep them oiled, the York has a seperate oiling mechanism which makes it perfect for OBA.

it would just be a typical engine driven OBA install with the exception that you need to add an oiler (like used for air tools) between the air filter and compressor inlet and make sure you empty the oil separator on the discharge side of the compressor more often - I know it's been done before
