Awhile ago my AAP leaked and caused me quite a headache. I got it all figured out and plugged my AAP at the vacuum line, and on the nipple itself coming out of the carburetor.

So far its so good and doesn't seem to have vacuum leaks, but raw fuel is dribbling out of the nipple on the carb as I drive....is this normal? Would it be okay to really plug this thing off for good? (line plug + hose clamp) or would it trap fuel in the carb and cause other problems...and is it even normal for fuel to come out once its warmed up? I was under the impression it was only when cold.

Anybody know where I could buy just the diaphragm?

You know, I might actually have a spare diaphragm out in my spare parts drawer in my toolbox. I can't guarantee I'll get to it today, but if you give me a day or two I'll mail it to ya. It's not new, but it's not blown either.

In the meantime, no harm in just plugging it. Once the diaphragm ruptures, the small amount of the pressure in the bowl could push some fuel out I guess.

 

Why don't you just replace the diaphragm? It only takes a few minutes and the part is only a couple of bucks.

 

No, not normal. The diaphragm is what separates, and seals, the fuel side (internal carburetor) from the vacuum side.


Me personally, I would just fix it.


No, also not normal. No fuel should be coming out of that diaphragm at any time. Sounds like a cracked or torn diaphragm. It's a common occurrence.

That diaphragm will work with an engine hot or cold because it is dependent upon the Bimetal Vacuum Switch Valve (BVSV) to route vacuum only on a cold engine. If your BVSV is not working correctly, then the AAP could be working all the time, or working incorrectly.

Part number 21667 (Sub). Looks like about $39 plus whatever freight to you.

 

Try Napa - they were able to get the part for me and way cheaper than going through any Toyota online parts supplier. I think I paid $19. Easy fix - def worth the small bit of trouble.
