Painting????

I just finished sanding the crappy MAACO paint job off my front quarter panel. I sprayed with a rattle can. I used Dupli-color self-etching primer and it turned out awesome. My question is, can I leave it like this??? I like the flat look it has now. Do I have to spray anything else on it? I've never done this so bear with me. James

I don't get it ... you paid for a paint job, and instead of expressing your dissatisfacton and having good automotive paint fixed, you rattle canned it?

The answer is yes you can leave it like that, but it's not going to hold up as well as "real" automotive paint.

In other words, the answer is NO. Primer is porous, so it would need to have some sort of sealant added next to offer protection. Companies now offer flat clears.

My bad!!! I bought the truck with a crap paint job and now I am fixing it. With this primer can I put Krylon paints on it then put a flat clear over it??? I'm trying to camo the truck out. I'm going to beat the hell out of this thing during hunting season.

Whitey13- So I can keep the primer as long as I get a flat clear for it?? Does it come in a rattle can???

If you're really going to beat on the paint, I'd skip the clear coat and just spray on a few coats of a flat aerosol (after proper prep). Krylon has a line of camouflage paints in all the standard (flat) colors. It's easier to touch it up without clear as well. If you're really interested in doing this, there are forums dedicated 100% to camo truck painting.

Oh ... my bad - I thought you had topcoated the primer with real paint!

You can absolutely not leave primer on there. Primer is designed to absorb water, and is not UV stabilized - it needs to be topcoated with "real" paint.

x2 on the Krylon camoflauge flat paint

so now that I have the primer on I can spray on some krylon rattle cans in the color I chose? If so, do I use a flat clear coat after that?

You just need to seal that primer. So, you don't need the clear unless you want to leave it the color of the primer. Otherwise, just spray some flat colors on.

Here is Tremclad Flat Black sprayed on with a gun, not cans. Thinned with mineral spirits. No clear or anything on top so I can touch up as needed.

Don't bother clearcoating it.

Believe me, I've seen many nice roll-on paint jobs. However, as someone who has better things to do with my time, I have no interest in wasting my time painting, waiting, sanding, painting, waiting, sanding, painting, waiting sanding, painting wating, sanding, sanding, sanding, buffing.
Here's the next "big thing": Air compressor+paint gun+1 day=done.

You ever used one, its more like:

Wetsand entire car, clean off, paint with primer, 3 coats waiting to dry in between, sand primer, paint, sand and coat again and again, then sand, polish. It takes a good 2-3 days to do a car by yourself if you want a nice paintjob, if you want meh it will only take you about 4 hours.

Thanks you, that is exactly my point.
Yes, I know how to paint a car the proper way. I am not going to get into an epic roll on vs. spray on paint discussion that has taken place ad nauseam on every car forum on the internet. If you want a so-so paint job job do it the easy way; spray it.

My paint job including the initial sanding took 8 hours the first day and 2 the next.

I'm just saying the roll on paint job is great. I had less than $75 into mine.
