Overheating diagnosis

Need help diagnosing problem with my 91 4runner v6, Started rough this morning, put it in drive and it died, died a few more times, finally got it running went about 3 blocks and the heat gauge was maxed out, got it back home and all sorts of steam was coming out of the overflow. No leak as far as I can tell, no puddle/trail. Lots of steam/smoke? out the exhaust on the 4th time starting it, went away quick. Also started idling rough a few days ago. Any ideas? Is this the right section for question like this?

Thanks-

1. is there coolant in the rad?

if rough idle started a few days ago, and now you have white smoke, sounds like HG failure. a "block test" will test for leaks at HG.

also, check under oil cap for white goo inside it. check coolant for oil contamination. check dipstick for white goo.

Oil cap is full of white goop, anyone have this fixed before? Any idea on cost to take it in to a shop? Possible reasons on why this happened?

Thanks-

hg's will fail in time. Cost depends on damage done at time of overheat. Aluminum heads, and every piece of metal that attaches to the motor with a gasket between it should be checked for warping, and resurfaced or replaced. Good luck bro, it's not cheap, but if you can tear down n rebuild yourself you can save a grand in labor. The instructions and support todo it is within this site.

good luckm we're all counting on you
