85 22r SA needs new head gasket. A little help?
Hi, my Friend needs to have the head gasket replaced on his 85. I figure its a good rig to do my first one.
The rig is an 85 22r carbed, solid axle. Before I start pouring over the FSM I thought it would be helpful for me to get a quick idea (in order) of what needs to come off prior to the head.
Any list in order would be very helpful to me.
I will document the job and do a write up here on YT

sorry toyo.. havent had to do a hd gasket or a timing chain (been lucky so far) but i have done watter pumps, oil pumps and the other extierior accesories. when i did my oil and watter pump on my 85 i eneded up just pulling the radiator, it made it really easy to get to the front of the motor... well thats about all the help i can be..have fun

well being that its carbed that will make things easier.
dizzy.
power steering pump(leave lines attached).
exhaust manifold(should be able to leave it attached to the down pipe and just tie it off to the side).
intake manifold.(leave carb on)
heater hoses.
ground wire (back of head to the firewall).
valve cover.
should also do a timing set since your there.

Don't spare the tape. (mark/label EVERYTHING)
Don't spare the memory before teardown. (take a million zillion pics while it's still together)
Get your parts from Ted (engnbldr)
I got this kit http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOT...1%7C240%3A1318 and it was of fantastic quality. You don't have to have new bolts in the 4 cyl like you do in the 6 cyl but it makes it a whole lot nicer. Or you can get studs as Roger suggests on his site which I will link below.

I used the '93 manual for my '86 and it was just fine.
You might as well just print out the whole cyl head section of the '93 manual and take it out in the garage. Then you can just pitch it when your done because it'll be toast by then anyway.
I fudged Rogers stud trick by cutting the heads off of 4 of my better old head bolts and used them to line up the head for replacement, then pulled them and replaced them with the new ones.

At the moment I am sitting here eating a cheese log from Costco, a box of Triscuits, drinking a Coors Light and reading the FSM section on "head gasket removal and replacement."
One of those 4 things is making queezy and I don't think its the cheese log from Costco, the Coors Light or the Triscuits

seriously, I would buy the Killians Brewery for you if you came over and helped me with this 85 HG. The Coors Light gives me just enough of a headache to mask the headache from thinking about this 85 head gasket.

im about to be on my 3rd (yes THIRD) headgasket in just a few months...first time..blew it fo sho!..
second time cam was bad...and it COMPLETELY wore out in just 2500 miles
now the third time...oil pump gave out on me..guess my idiot light dont work...and it ate all the bearings up..hahaha...i figured since i pulled the engine anyway...why not rebuild it..bore it...cam it...all that...so theres where im at..waiting for my block to get back from the machine shop..and waiting on my parts from engnbldr.com

take the manifold off, tie it back
do the same with the exhaust manifold
do the same with the A/C and the power steering pump
drain your antifreeze...i think..haha
remove your head bolts...but not your cam bolts..
what else guys????
if you want to give your motor a lil more pep...might as well throw in a new cam...engnbldr 261* for low end grunt...or the 268* for more high eind power...i do more highway driving with 31's than anything..so im going with the 268* cam...unless someone chimes in on the 261* also bein ok for this stuff...
and when you do that.you might as well get a header...then a new exhaust from there back.
its neverending....and i hate it...HAHAHAH!!!

I found out this morning the timing chain was done about 50,000 ago. SO, I don't need to do it.
How will this change the order of stuff to come off? What don't I need to take off as a result of leaving the timing chain?

I am headed out to do it was we speak. I need to make a trip to Wally World to get a new digi camera. My old faithful Nikon broke.
