Ok, so if I am at full steering stop either right or left, and go over even the slightest bump so the truck ('88 runner, stock suspension) cycles the suspension even just a little bit, I hear a loud popping type noise. I have manual hubs, which are disengaged. The noise never happens, even over large bumps, when going straight. I am hoping its not anything to do with the t bars, i was thinking either cv shafts or ball joints.
Any thoughts?

 

This is the infamous steering stop noise. Do a search and you will find plenty of info on it, or get under the front of your truck and dab a little grease on the stops every once in a while. That will help.

They originally had a nylon piece that would prevent the noise, but these pieces wear out fast.

 

They all make that noise...get used to it!

 

Just bought my first yota and noticed the same thing. glad to see its not something i have to be concerned about...

 

Mine does it too. You can grease them a bit, that helps.

you would think that since there's such a huge issue with this, someone out there would develope a permanent fix for this, like maybe little metal rollers to put in place of the stops or something...

 

No need: If you grease them every few months (I do it when changing my oil) they will never make a noise.

But in regaurds to the original question. Since it makes a noise when going straight we can rule out steering stop noise. Check your wheel bearings and your idler arm. They both can make pretty bad noises when they are worn.

 

He said that the noise never happens, even over large bumps, when his is going straight. It is the steering stops for sure.

 

I greased them up, and so far, so good. thanks again guys
