ome coils

hey just got my runner going and i need to lift it... it is necessary. so i'm gonna do 1.5" bj spacers and ome 900 coils. so will i absolutely need new shocks? because i can't afford it all at once right now. so will i be able to put the lift in, about 2" and be able to keep the stock shocks for temporary?
thanks

With the 900's I think you could get away with it. If I remember correctly, the stock shocks only stop the droop an inch or 2 from the point that the links sorta bind and limit maximum droop anyhow. Just keep from jumping it!

For the front, yeah...stock shocks ought to do the trick. The bumpstops limit droop still, and you may need to shim the upper bumpstop some anyhow. I didn't really gain much droop from my spacers cause my aftermarket cv axles bound at full droop until I shimmed them with a nut. I could get pics of that if you don't get what I'm explaining, I know I'm not always the most clear with my descriptions.

ok, that's just what i'm looking for. i'll probably do that. so you did that lift then? just curious about the wear on the cv joints... i've heard that cranking the torsion bars is hard on them, is the bj spacer lift hard on them too? do they wear down quickly? have you noticed?

For a given lift height, be it from torsion bars or ball joint spacers, CV joint/boot wear and tear is equal, all comes down to what angle they are operating at and how often they are used. A front differential drop kit can help lessen the CV joint angles:

Manual hubs up front (assuming you don't have them already) can help as well as you can unlock them in 2WD and this keeps the CVs from turning all the time.

ok thanks for all the info. i'll probably do the front diff drop to make it all work out better as well.
but just looking at this page with the 900 coils and bj spacers.
http://www.trdparts4u.com/scripts/pr...dproduct=-7498
it says it will not work with stock shocks... so just wondering cuz it was mentioned here that it will. is it just the place trying to make more money? or will they not work?
thanks.

If you find the rear axle is pulled too far to the passenger side or the driveshaft is hitting the gas tank skid plate, then a panhard drop is a good idea:

It restores the rear braking effectiveness:

I've got the medium duty coils (they lift it about right for BJ spacers if you don't carry lots of heavy stuff in the back)

I really recommend the LSPV bracket mentioned before in this thread. Basically, its a ~2"x3" rectangle of scrap metal with 2 sets of holes drilled in it. If you netted 2.75" lift above stock, drill the two sets of holes 2.75" apart. It dramatically restores braking ability.

New shocks are not necessary, although OME springs are really stiff and are best paired with really soft shocks, ideally OME Nitrocharger shocks. I hated my ProComps with OME springs- way too harsh a ride.

medium duty? so would those be the 901's? or are they different?
ya i'll probably end up getting one of those brackets then if they make that much difference.
so thanks for the info. probably change over the shocks in the spring or something. can't do it all at once... lol.
thanks

i LOVE the OME coils!!! i have the rancho rs5000's though but wanna get the 9000's... my friend had a problem with the panhard bar, its a bitch to get in and limits his travel a lot. you should consider getting a panhard drop bar cause it helps alot, and its a PITA to get back in after the coils....

i have the ome901hd coils cause they will last a little longer before they start to droop and the ride is not bad, just like the 900's...

anyways!,... good luck with the whole procedure though shocks and the panhard bar are not neccesary, but i would think about getting them eventually.

^ only for the front BJ spacers... you can't align a non-steering solid axle (ie: rear).

Not quite sure what you meant by the shocks in the springs... there are no coil-overs (where the shock rests inside the coil spring) on pre-'96 4Runners. On our trucks, you can replace the shocks and springs independently.

ok. thanks. i might get the 901's if they last longer. just thought they might be a little stiffer. but if they're ok i'll probly do that.
and the panhard i'm really considering getting. i've heard a lot about in over the past while and seems important.
thanks
