oil additives, good, bad?

after finally figuring out whats wrong with the 3.0, i start getting an oil leak, its a small one, it will leak about a 3 inch puddle over night. anyway my moms pissed that im dirtying up the driveway and shes making me put tarp under it, its getting annoying, and to make things worse, its leaking from the rear main seal. just wondering if anyone has ever used the additives to stop a leak and if it worked.

They don't work IMO. If you want to keep the truck I'd fix the problem.

actually, change your pcv valve, its only gonna be about 5 bux for the valve and the grommet but it might solve your problem. One thing that causes oil seal failure is pressure, if there is too much pressure in the crankcase, oil will be forced past the seal. 5 bux would be alot easier than changing the rear main seal. if it doesnt fix the leak, your truck would at least get better gas mileage and it would run better. the pcv valve is commonly overlooked. for 5 dollars, its worth a shot.

try to get it fixed. oil stains are hard to get out of the driveway. Oil additives tend to mask the issue, and I doubt that you'd be able to put in an additive that would stop the leak, but more likley just slow it, either way you're still leaking on the driveway.

I personally prefer cardboard for soaking up small leaks.

Those additives make the rubber seals expand.

It obviously isn't cheap to replace the rear main seal; but it is cheaper than having the rear main seal done, along with a clutch, clutch hydraulics, and other things that go with it. The longer you wait, the more possibility of something else bad happening in addition to the rear main seal; I know from experience.

If you're leaking as much as you say you are, then you're far beyond any oil additives. I was leaking about 2qts between oils changes, but after switching to Max-Life and using BG MOA (the only oil additive worth using in my ASE opinion) my rear seal only leaks about .5-1 qt between oil changes.

But as I said- yours is too far gone in my personal opinion.

Anybody got any pics of rear main seal location? Also what is a PCV valve, and how would that effect an oil leak?

Additives suck... They might stop that leak though, along with about 50% of all of the oil passages in the engine too.

Btw, where you at in FL?

I recommend Kitty litter for the driveway. Pour it over the oil then with the ball off your shoed foot, grind it in. Do that for about 15-30 minutes putting new kitty litter down. Sweep up and it'll look like you never had an oil leak. We airdales call it the Fallon Shuffle. Works great.

I'd also try putting a quart of Lucas oil in your engine. Like the others said, it''ll just delay the inevitable. I thought that I had a rear main seal leak once. I replaced the front seal and oil pump oring and also dropped my oil pan and resealed with silicon. Voila, no more oil leak.
