#61
Great job sir...I just recently dealt with Jerry from 22rePerformance and bottom line is these guys are awesome. Excellent customer service!!!!! Ill get my parts next week and there is no doubt in my mind that I could call and ask any 22re question and it would be answered.
Great work on the install....And thank you for the Thread!!

RAD4Runner's Truck Also Needs Rebuilt 22RE
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience and knowledge. I'm shopping for a replacement engine that's:
- Reasonably-priced, AND
- Whose vendor has consistent good reviews
So far, only 22RE Performance (same as Putney's Machine?) satisfies both requirements (LCE's too expensive for my needs and I found one negative review).
Jerry, I'll be in touch through your website.
Best regards,
RAD

More Feedback Please?
Really appreciate that snobdds. That's probably the best, if not scientific, testimony to quality!
Guys, on a slightly scientific matter...
I have blown HG. Until the HG issue, my truck can only go 50 MPH in 4th gear on steep roads, like:
May I ask for your guys' opinion/experience?

I have blown HG. Until the HG issue, my truck can only go 50 MPH in 4th gear on steep roads, like:
- On this east-bound section of Scripps-Poway Parkway (steep)
- On Tejon Pass
May I ask for your guys' opinion/experience?
- Is that typical of a 22RE?
- Is it because my engine is plain old?
- Would doing only a head job improve things? Or is bottom end already too old?
- How much improvement compared to that would a rebuild (say, from 22RE Performance) give me?
- 65 MPH or better in above road conditions?

It's probably a combination of things...
My route to my cabin requires me to go up a hill called the "summit". It's the highest point on the interstate system (I-80, 8,000 ft) and it's located right outside of Laramie. It's about 10 miles of 9% grade. The trick with my truck is to get a good run at it in 4th gear and get the rpm's up as high as possible. This is where the max power band of the truck is at. If no trucks or cars cut me off, I can keep 4th gear and do about 60-65 mph dependent on the wind. If I have to slow down at all, then I have to down shift to 3rd to get the RPM's back up in the power range. I do 60 in 3rd gear all the time, 22re's can easily run that all day long. Just have a really good cooling system.
Most people think having a tired engine or weak bottom end is what makes them go slow, it's more because the lost compression on higher mileage engines and it's impact on hp. Putting a new HG on would restore compression if all other components are good. However, with a new HG and restored compression, it puts more stress on the worn bearings on the bottom end. This can cause a bearing to spin...

i haven't been on that scripps poway road for awhile, but there is no way that you'll ever be able to go up the grapevine in 5th gear, with any normally aspirated 22re, in a stock weight truck:
doing it at 50mph the whole way with a 22re is an accomplishment, imho.
the problem is that whatever you do to the engine will have to pass the ca smog check, so you are seriously limited.

Ray, I just got back from a long mammoth trip. Took the Yota this year! first long trip after my full rebuild. I was loaded down with camping/fishing gear for 10 days. The Sherwin Grade on the 395 between Bishop and Mammoth put my yota to the test. I THINK Bishop is at an elevation of around 4,000 feet and mammoth at about 8,000 feet, and I believe the average grade is about 6% and goes for about 30 miles. I was sometimes barely going 50MPH in 5th, much of it I was down in 4th going between 40-55MPH, and I think I had to go down to 3rd a few times. I have 235 tires and stock gears.
I wish I got a picture, but there was a 3rd gen 2WD pickup with a homemade wood camper shell on the back - saggy butt big time! he was chugging up that grade at about 30-35MPH. He was the ONLY car I passed! It was funny, as I passed him my lab and I are looking at him and him and his dog are looking over at us....we just waved at each other smiling, hahahahaa. Later during the week I saw his truck at the Vons in Mammoth City, so I know he made it!
Oh yeah, and starting from Big Pine at around 4,000 feet up to the campgrounds at Sage Flats which is about 8,000 feet, I spent a 1/4 of the way in 2nd going 30MPH! I don't know what the grade is but the winding roads going up for 7-8 miles is pretty steep.
It sure was fun driving that thing though, it made me feel good that the little engine I built made it. I usually take my 05' Fronty - 4.0L v6 261HP and cruise up those grades, but there's no fun in that!

Hi guys,
Great many thanks again for all your thoughts, ideas, suggestions.
I really like the idea of 22RE Performance's Stage 2. However, I find the lead-time too long of a wait, and found a local shop with good reviews that could rebuild my engine quicker.
Jerry &Jim, I'm most thankful for your prompt response to my inquiry by email and over the phone.
You guys are a great shop. I wish you the best and more power!
Best regards,
Ray

I think I'm getting close to 30 thousand now.
Still running strong. I use it mostly in the winter because it's a no fuss type of vehicle and dead nut reliable in any weather. I haven't driven it much this spring/summer due to a new ecoboost f150 and the diesel.
I get withdrawals if I don't get my yota fix, so I just gave it an oil change and will be taking it to the cabin on a solo mission. Just me, the dog and truck. Life is good...

I had a 22re performance stage 2 installed in my 4runner a couple years ago. Even though the wait time was 3 months i enjoyed the outcome. It gives me peace of mind when wheeling up in the Sierra Nevada mountains or anywhere in general that i purchased a very well built engine from one of the top rated engine rebuilders. Even though ive only put 15k miles on it so far.

Hey great thread! I need some help... have a 94 Toyota pickup 2WD. Just a basic hauler for when i need it. I was curious how your motor is now doing? And do you recommend them over Jasper? I think my motor is shot... Thanks Stephen.

Motor is still holding up great. I don't know anything about the Jasper motor, but whatever you do...don put in cheap Chinese parts.

Drove it to work today when we got 18 inches of snow and it was -18. Fired right up and off I went.
I am planning on doing some maintenance this spring on the truck, but the motor is still running great.

Hey snobdds, I just got word from the shop that my head gasket is starting to fail on my 22RE with 185k miles. Apparently the compression tests show the bottom end is holding up fine, and the motor hasn't been eating oil (just coolant). I'm torn - pay the $1800 to have a shop do a top-end rebuild and re-machine the header, or just go for a 22RE Performance Stage 2 motor? I can probably make it for another several months on existing gasket (the backup for a 22RE Performance engine build is now 7 months!!).
What would you do in my case? Is the time and money for the 22RE Performance motor worth it even given the motor on mine seems fine other than the top end?
Thanks!
