need timing advice

1986 4Runner 22RE Just changed cam and looking for location of diagnostic port to connect jumper wire TE1 to abc or whatever the manual says. HELP where is this connection. I know i should have marked everything when i took it apart but hindsight is 20/20. Any advice to get timing hooked back up would be helpful. Crank at 0, cam sprocket at 12 o'clock. Distributor? should rotor be facing #1 or just before. Any pictures would be great. Thanks, Adam

The diagnostic port is normally located close to the fuse block on the passenger side. It is usually grey in color, rectangular in shape and has 'DIAGNOSIS' on its cover. It has been noted that 'some' models came with a diagnosis port on the driver's side and is round in shape.

I have both. 86runner but it has an 87 22re from a truck. When i changed motors the new motor has a diagnostic box but there are also two round yellow plugs that plug into the fenderwell on the driver side. One is bigger than the other, which one should i short? and i assume i should short both? HELP

I'm confused a little. The plugs/modules on the drivers side don't have anything to do with the diag port? I've never heard of shorting the 2 plugs on the drivers side fender well?

The diag port thing is on the passenger side with the fuses. It's like a small 1"x2" grey box with a flip lid. And then you short T1 and E1 to do the timing. Stick a paperclip or something to short the 2 terminals.

Is this what you're talking about? I just did my timing and all that yesterday. I'm not sure what you mean about shorting the 2 plugs on the drivers side.

on my 85 you just short one single plug with two connectors on it. there is no diagnostic port. check out rogers page here. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...CheckConnector

Well thanks for the advice. I got it running again. Two problems codes 6 and 11 and I'm having trouble setting the timing cuz the crank pulley keeps moving. "besides spinning around" ha ha. is theere a clutch in there or what. lack of power in fourth and fifth any advice.?

If you can't get your timing right, your TPS sensor is probably out of adjustment. This tells you how to do it:

Thanks, for the site. Got the timing set right and drove it for three days then the head gasket blew again. This time i'll have to mark everything when i take it apart and have the head milled. also need to use better gasket.

Geez....

I went through timing hell for weeks...finally got it right yesterday. I had to mess with the distributor...and go through days of having it off by a tooth and the truck wouldn't start...arrrgh.

Finally got the dist right, and the freaking timing was right on at 5*, and I didn't even need to adjust it. First time my timing has been correct since I've had the darn thing!
