Hi everyone. I have an 88 4Runner w/ the 22re. The problem is the truck will start for a couple of seconds then dies if i hit the gas. If I dont hit the gas it runs a few seconds longer but still dies.

So far, I have replaced the in tank pump and strainer, main fuel filter, plugs, cap, rotor. The egr is not plugged up and i can't find any vacuum leaks.

I noticed that if i kink the fuel return line the truck stays running. Does this mean the fuel pressure regulator is shot?It holds a vacuum and is not leaking gas through the diaphragm. Is it possible to run with out a fpr?

Also, anybody have a cold start valve they want to sell me? I can't believe i stripped the threads. I guess these things happen when you are frustrated and have been huffing gas fumes for days.
I need to get this truck back up and running. Being a student funds are limited. Thanks.

 

Check to see if your air flow meter is working. A bad one would cause exactly what your experiencing.

As far as the other problems,have you pulled any codes? Have you checked your afm and the air tube? Also I would short the fuel pump to eliminate that. Do you have a FSM. you can down load a 85 for free and it will help you trouble shoot the system.

 

What is the best way to do this? So far all i have done was with the key in the run position, i moved the afm vane to see if the fuel pump would kick on and it did. Also what other vehicles use the same afm?

A major air leak in your intake tubing would cause the same thing, like Lifelongtoy said.

 

Hi TNRabbit. I have checked the entire intake tubing and all little vacuum lines. When I block the fuel retrun line it runs a whole lot better. I guess I will re check again. Where in TN are you from? I just moved to East Tennessee myself

Low fuel pressure?

Live in MD for now, but I'm originally from Sparta.

 

low fuel pressure has been my guess so far. i cant afford to spend money replacing good parts. I guess my question should be "why does plugging the fuel return line at the tank make my truck run"? Is my fpr bad despite holding a vacuum? I wonder if it is seized in the open position?

 

Can you do a fuel pressure check? They have kits at Sears....

Well I statically checked my afm and it tested with in specs. The air pipe from afm to throttle body shows some age, but no cracks (When held up to light none shines through to the inside as i flex it)

So do i take the plunge and get a new fuel pressure regulator? The way i see it for the 60 bucks it costs to get a fuel pressure gauge i can spend an extra 10 and get a new fpr.
Then again I may not want to get another one because the one i have is excellent, it's just 4000 miles away
