need a motor

Well my motor is going.
Right now it doesn't knock until I rev it high and usually it's when it's wound out under a load before I shift gears.
Anyways bottom line I don't have alot of money hey were in a recession.

My options are right now a used junkyard motor.

I need some opinions here so here's my options so far.

1) I found a 85 supra everything is there the 5mge the bell housing the harness and ecu.
Only thing missing is the radiator which I can source one.
Motor condition is unknown. has some crusty oil but I have no idea how long it has been there.
It's missing the gauge cluster so I have no idea how many miles on it.
It has some rust tender spot on the body so likely that's why it ended up there.
They told me $400 for the whole vehicle asis.

2) I found a 1991 toyota truck with a 22re the motor had some parts taken off it the throttle body and the alternator.
Everything else is there.
No real visable leaks on it the motor. It turns by hand with a long ratchet on the front crank and I can hear the cylinders presurizing.
Over all it seems ok. The body of the truck is junk alot of rust holes.
It has 140,000 on the odometer. I was told $200 for the motor asis.

3) a 1992 ext cab 2wd automatic with a 22re. It runs sounds good. I started it up has a valve cover leak and looks like maybe a lower front main leak.
The truck has 148,000 miles on it.
They told me $300 for the motor again asis.

Anyways need some input here. I would like to have my 4 runner fixed in the next month or so but I hate these options but that's what they are.
I don't really want to rebuild my motor either and it's been knocking for about a month so likely the crankshaft will be toasty.

I do like the possibility of a 5mge but I dunno alot of blanks on it so far.
A used 22re would be the simplest solution but again hit or miss wether or not if I have to replace it again.....
I hate crap shoots but this is it.

If you're going to spend the cash and effort to swap a supra engine, you're really better off with a 7mgte. Not going to be a cheap swap either way though.

I'd check the compression of the running engine, and if OK take it. Not hard to change the rear/front main and valve cover gasket.

$200 or $300 crap shoot and then you are going to end up spending more money to "maybe" get a motor that is any better

Been there and done that. Cheaper in the long run to just do it right the first time. Rebuild.

Lol I know what u mean. However being unemployed at the moment not a lot of choice here till I get some more coin if you know what I mean.
Well I decided on option #2. I have a timing chain and a new egr left over. I am going to replace the headgasket on it just in case.

Naw man knowing it runs and aint knocking and crap is worth the 100 bucks. Plus you get the extra parts too. Be sure to pull the igniter and coil. But the Wabbit is still right, but understand doing what ya gotta do.

Well I got the motor today I am very luky.
It turns out this motor has a brand new LUK clutch on it. Sweet deal. Hell the clutch alone is worth $140 so one less thing to do.
Other than that it looks good and it looks like the water pump and front cover had been replaced so I am thinking they did the timing chain on it too recently. Also the motor only has 140,000 miles on it and I am close to that right now.
I am about 1500 miles away from it so true mileage won't be off too much.

Only Thing I have done so far is pressure wash the motor.
I start on tearing it down next week and possibly painting the block to look nice..... then installing it.
