My 92's been throwing code 22 for the past several months (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor). It's getting annoying now because it intermittantly blinks on and off, on when I hit the gas, and off when I let go at highway speeds.

Anyway, I'd like to locate this sensor and test it to see what's wrong with it. Can anyone help me locate it? I've looked at the FSM and it shows a picture of where to test it, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

It resides on the back of the block kinda under the manifold.. Ive looked for some better pics but this is the best I can come up with right now.

Ok that gives me a general idea of where to begin looking.

The next problem is how I'm gonna get to it to investigate what the problem is.

I haven't noticed any performance issues since the CEL, and I'd rather have it just stop blinking at me off-and-on and just stay on.

Anyway, I guess I'll go to work trying to see what the issue is.

It may have a bad connection. When I redid my head gaskets I didn't get it hooked up good and got a code 22. Check inside the connector and make sure it's not pushed in too far.

 

Ok so I just found out there's a few connectors back there.

I think it's the one on the top...is this correct? Hopefully the contacts just need cleaning or something like that.

 

If the connections are tight and clean you will have to test the resistance of the sensor when it is cold then monitor is as the engine warms up. Do this with the sensor unplugged. Usually you will find the sensor looses resistance at a certain temp then comes back into spec. You can also test the voltage of the sensor in the same manner and basically tests the same thing. Do this with the sensor plugged in. Good luck it is tight quarters back there.

 

Wow I can barely move around back there...I may have to pull these heater hoses to get the job done.

If the voltage/resistance doesn't check out to factory specs, should I replace it myself or have someone else do it?? Is it hard to do it?
