Nasty Transfer case

So my son was out in the yard washing his '87 Toy and to keep from slipping and tearing up the grass he put it in 4x4. Our yard is sloped wear we was washing. So as a result, it stuck in neutral on the transfer case. I pulled the top and found LOTS of rust and nasty sludge. I mean it has lots of just nasty loose rust laying in the top. So I want to flush it out but not sure on what I can get away with. I was thinking about pulling the plug and pouring diesel fuel down it until I got clean fuel running out. Then putting new oil in it, letting the boy run it while and repeating.

Oh, I almost forgot. I pushed the levers back into place, put the top back on enough to try it again and it stuck again. So I just put it in 2x4 and told the boy to not go anywhere he might need 4x4 until we get it fixed. So what do yall got for me in ways of advice?

Put some atf in it. The detergents in it will clean it up pretty good. May take a couple times but it will help alot.
