Well, I'm back. I couldn't stay away for long after selling my beloved 4Runner just over a year ago.

I went and purchased a 1990 22R 4speed base Pickup 2WD. It has 14x,000 miles and seems to run pretty good. The first thing I need to do is get the front end tightened up. It seems the steering is loose/sloppy. I also need to do shocks all around. Any other suspension parts to consider with this 20 year old creampuff?

It's a disease.... it goes into remission once in a while but it's always there. Owning a Yota is like catching herpes, you didn't want the infection when you got into it but once it takes hold you're stuck with it.

Because of this forum I decided to keep and get mine repainted..

 

check the idler arm and the strut rod bushings to tighten up the steering, and if it needs to be replaced, spend the money on good stuff. i cheaped out and bought the no name "ebay special" crap and it was just that, crap. it lasted all of about 6 months and most of it had to be replaced again.

 

I had a beet'ah 86 2x, loved that bugger, if it was not for that truck my 88 would have 479000 miles.

 

Yay, I'm not alone! Another poor bugger with a 4spd transmission on a base 2wd pickup.

Mine's mostly stock too (I say mostly because stuff is missing/broken and my bed is made out of wood). Some advice: look at your drive belt, mine was in shambles and I drove it for 2 months before finding out when I finally got around to taking care of my whiny alternator.

I know I'll need to mess with the carb this weekend. It doesn't like the cold weather and I notice some hesitation at different speeds. Overall, the motor doesn't smoke and seems strong. It just needs some fine tuning.

 

Get some of that spray can carb cleaner and have at, it sounds like you choke and throttle are a little stiff. I've been having trouble with cold weather startup too, it's because my carb is a little gummed up atm. I gave my choke plate a good soaking with carb cleaner to try to get it to start a little more readily in the cold weather, didn't seem to do much, it still won't close all the way during cold start but it does close a little more than before. I think a few successive treatments might get it to free up the rest of the way. It's not really a major problem for me, but it can be annoying having to keep at it for a couple minutes just to get started.

 

Yep. I'm going to try that. The PO had the carb rebuilt (I have receipt that it was done). I wouldn't be surprised if I have to adjust a few things... I've never really done any work on a carb before but I'm going to research as much as I can before I turn a single screw.
