My key stopped working
So I just went out to hop in my truck and head out and my key wouldn't open the door. It didn't give me any warning or anything. All the sudden, my key wont open the door. The passenger side has never worked, now its the drivers side. I am just really hoping that when I break in, the ignition will still turn.

are you able to put the key in the key hole. if so, i would recommend powdered graphite. you can get it at part stores if not the home improvement store. my key would actually go in but would not turn, until the graphite that is!!!!

Probably just worn out. If you've got a spare, try that. If you can have a new key cut using your old key as a template, try that - might make enough of a difference to work. Lastly, try another old Toyota key with a similar cut.

If you need new locks, just take them all out of the truck and leave them with a local locksmith. It should be no problem to fix them all at once.

No sign of a break in, thank god. I am about to break in myself and head down to get a copy made. I hope that works. My uncle owned the truck before me. He locked himself out so many times that he drilled holes in the door locks. Its pretty easy to jimmy a coat hanger down there and pop it open.

I jimmy rigged the door open, key works in ignition, new copied key doesn't work in the door and barely in the ignition.
So now I don't have a working key for my doors. I am going to check it out with a locksmith, if that doesn't work It'll be time to install a kill switch.

I had to switch to my spare a few years ago but it has been working fine ever since...
You might even be able to take toe worn key down and get it copied and the new one might work better. Every copy seems to be just a little different from what I've seen.

Dont make a copy of your worn out key, that is about as usefull as making a key with a file.
Go to the dealership with your ID and registration and have them vin cut the key, that way you will have a brand new original shape key.

I already got a copy of the shot out key made, it didn't help, see 2 posts back. I just talked to our local dealer and I am on my way down there, they said they can set me up.
Thanks for the help.

I had to have the dealer cut me a new key as well - it stopped working in the ignition. this was 2 years ago and the dealer said they were about to get rid of all the key cutting info for 1993 and older trucks.

Alright I have a working key now!!!!! Took my registration into the dealer and the cut me a new key. It ran $15 but it's worth it. My truck is a 94 by the way.
