Even with 190k miles it was worth it to me to invest in a new cat-back: I chose the following:
1. High-Flow 2 1/4" Catalytic Converter
2. 2 1/4" Cat-Back Piping (had to weld the rear O2 sensor bracket-California Emissions crud)
3. 18" Magnaflow Muffler
4. All-Stock hangers and stock pattern.

Of all the $ i've put in replacing stuff (K&N, caps, rotors, wires, plugs, injector clean, intake r&r cleaning), this is the best investment for a pure Horsepower return. IMHO, I totally agree with others on here that the stock manifold "header" is quite good for our little trucks.
I did notice a decrease in low-end torque, but immediately had power-in-reserve at highway speeds and was going 90mph+ for the first time since new!

I have a newer car, but in LA I would rather drive my old un-imposing truck, and this upgrade made me fall in love with her all over again! Highly recommended.

I put a new Bosal on my 90 3VZ-E recently. Which had about 2' of leftover straight pipe behind the cat when I bought it. The OEM muffler had obviously rusted away and fallen off at some point. As is typically the case. Anyway, I bought the cheapest one they had on RockAuto that came with the pipes to and fro so I could bolt it on in there with a new gasket and be done with it. Piece o' cake. Other than the fabbed hanger I made for the last piece of pipe that hangs out the back. That might have taken me a 1/2 hour to put together out of a bolt I had laying around, and the extra tube clamp thingy that came with the muffler unit. But no welding required. And now I've got the quietest Toyota PU I've ever heard(or rather not heard). She's my little stealth ninja assassin now. Gets me in and out of anywhere, and you'd never know I was even there. Unless you happened to see me. Because you sure won't hear me.

I've run a few different setups throughout the years. Currently my exhaust is thorley header -> 2.25" spun high flow cat -> 2.25" Magnaflow 18" muffler. 2.25" pipe throughout. This is fairly quiet, with a deep tone if I really get on it.
Valvetrain with the comp 252s is generally louder than the exhaust, haha.

No loss of low end at all with this set up, although I do have a torquey cam so it might be hard to tell.

picked up a Flowtech Glasspack to mate up to a 2.25" tubing from cat to turndown. 3vze. I like it, my girlfriend thinks its a little loud. Super deep at idle, throaty up to about 3000 then a little droney. not bad on the highway windows up or down.

I have an 89 4runner 3vze..Its stock with the pipe cut off after the cat. Thinking of just having a muffler installed and keeping the stock cat. I want quiet but im second guessing keeping the cat only because im sure its probably clogged full of mud and god knows what else. You guys think i can keep it and not have it hurt performance(haha) or should i just replace it to allow for better flow? Or could it be quiet without the cat and just a muffler? I should probably mention that ive ripped off my floor carpet and im planning on laying down some bedliner for easy clean up. So the road noise comes in easily. Maybe i should search for a sound blocking bedliner...Your thoughts?

Just got a magnaflow 18 inch 2 1/4 inlet with 2 1/4 outlet stainless steel matched to my doug thorley headers , and a brand new Toyota oem cat. And I love it !!! Nice and quiet at idle and a mild nice deep sound above 3k perfect if you wanna stay away from the load import car noise , I highly recommend this muffler for the 3.0 v6 it's a magnaflow part number l11255 cost 95 bucks and lifetime warranty.

and throttle response is noticeably improved as well moves quicker !

Got my 89 22re with a one in two out Flowmaster dual. Looks like PO also removed cat. It's straight pipe all the way to muffler then straight duals out. Sounds good. Loud. Helps drown out the grinding of my dying transmission.

I have a 2.5 inch pipe system coming off THORLEY long back headers. Straight into a borla muffler. Sounds really rich and low when at an idle and mean going down the highway. Not obnoxious inside unless all the windows are down.

90 4runner, 3inch suspension lift, 40 inch light bar, 35in Nitto terra grapplers, Method racing rims, Kenwood head unit, 4 6 1/2 inch pioneer two way door speakers run off a 600 watt 4 channel jl audio amp, 2 12in jl w3 woofers on a 5000 watt sundown audio amp. Custom brush guard, custom led headlights.

Flowmast DBX, Nice improvement over wornout cherry bomb. But anything would've been an improvement.

Some generic flowmaster, its just a round can with strait flow through. Stainless steal muffler and tail pipe stock everything else. not loud but more rumble then stock oem that was on there.

Aloha from Hawaii! I have so many questions for you guys. So my cat was glowing red after driving only 30min...Must be clogged? I'm debating whether to gut the cat and run straight pipe with no cat or to just replace the cat? I garantee that I will have to cut the cat out cus the nuts/bolts are rusted out. I am only concerned about performance, not sound, although I would prefer stealth over noise like MudHippy. How will gutting the cat hurt or help the performance? Also, my muffler has some rusted holes, should I change that out at the same time? What is the stock size of exhaust pipe? Any advice? Thank you for any help!

I had to put a new cat on my '88 4X4 to pass emissions. So I went with a flowmaster 2 1/2" cat in front of a 2 1/4" thrush turbo. That has taken it almost out of the ricer blare and into almost mello tones. Maybe a 2 1/2" turbo would complete the transformation?
