okay...i know about throwing in a 3.4 now, and also replacing the 3.0(which i do NOT want to do)...what id really like to do is a diesel swap as i am a diesel fanatic..but that would probably be the most costly of them all. so im lookin for more options....what motors are able to bolt up to the 1992 Manual 5speed transmission that was powered by my 3.0. is it only the 3.0 that will fit?

also what adapter kits are made....a GM/Ford v6 or v8 or a Toyota I4 or v8 would be awesome...any ideas?

Easiest swap would be a 3.4L that you can get with all the wiring and whatnot. Other swaps would include:
chevy smallblock v8
chevy 4.3L v6
toyota v8 from a cruiser
chevy LT1
possibly a ford 5.0

Diesel: best bet is a toyota diesel if you can get one, but this entails running new fuel lines and a new fuel pump and such too. Other ideas are to find a diesel jetta or jeep liberty CRD diesel.

A 1uz-fe (lexus 4.0 V8) will bolt up to your R150 tranny using the bellhousing kit from Dellows in Australia. It's a custom bellhousing along with a bunch of other tid bits to make your tranny bolt to a lexus V8. You would be on your own for the engine mounts, wiring, etc.

Check out Dellow automotive at www.dellowauto.com.au. They even called me from Australia when I emailed them a question! Very impressive!

thanks....a 4.0 v8 would be amazing...but the price of that motor is over 3000...i guess ill keep searching until i find a cheaper diesel/3.4/or *gasp*3.slow...thanks for yalls input. my goal here is to keep this swap to close to 3000, but im learning that even on a used 3.0, thats near impossible if you want this thing to become reliable

Yep, you'll definitely find that, even busted up, our Toys hold their value pretty well.

My 3.4 conversion ran me about $5K. I hope to recover some of that by selling the usable stuff left on the Taco.

The 1UZ-FE (4.0 Lexus V8) is a great engine, producing around 250/260 horses/torque respectively. Cost on the engine itself isn't that bad either. They run from 500-1000 USD. I payed 1250 for mine, but it came in a car ;-). There is a guy in Cali making bellhousing kits for the 1UZ to mount to the R series std. transmissions in the U.S. That includes clutch flywheel bellhousing etc for around 750 U.S. If you can get an entire car, you have the wiring harness intact and most stuff should be plug and play. Then, you have the ability to sell parts off the car and whatnot which is always a good money recovery item. I'm aiming for under 2500 on my swap, but we'll see how it goes.

P.S. I'm even going to take the gas tank from the Lexus and put it in the trunk or the spare tire spot under the vehicle as a 20 gallon aux. tank.

sounds cool man...ill look into it...as far as wiring goes....there really should be too much should there? i mean if ikept the manual transmission speedo gear wil lbe the same...and its a manual so no controlled shift points. besides the amount of fuel injected...and stuff like that i cant think of anythin else the comp would be needed for

Ideally there shouldn't be too much, but there is. ECU's have diagnostic controls built in, they want to control the transmission (which is where you might have to fool the ECU), EGR system, AFM/AFR, timing, EGR, fuel pressure, etc etc etc.

All sorts of sensors on these things, but overall, it should be mostly plug and play. You can pay a nominal (500 bucks i think) fee to get a custom loom made thats simple plug in a few wires and go, but I'd rather just do it the hard way.

I hadn't heard about that. I thought Dellows and and one other company in Australia were the only companies making them. Do you have a website or anything for this guy? It sounds great!

There are quite a few people "frankensteining" their bellhousings, but here is the link. The cast for the R series transmissions should be done sometime in late February I think. You might have to sign up to view this forum, not sure.

Thanks! It's great that somebody in the US is starting to make these. Looks like that guy is moving along pretty well too. $750 doesn't seem terribly bad since it comes with the flywheel and clutch.

I wonder if the 1uz starter is still going to reside on top of the engine? I hope not. It'll make supercharging the engine a bit harder.

Yeah, the starter will still be located on the top ofthe engine, but it won't be a problem due to the lower plenum design... I'm going to supercharge (roots style) in the future as well.

If you really want a diesel, I can't imagine it'd be too hard to speak with a motor importer (someone who imports 2JZGTE motors from Japan frequently) about bringing in a diesel Hilux Surf motor. It might be easier to locate one than you think. And I think it'd be sweet as hell to have a diesel 4runner.

Jarco usually has a few Toyota diesels in stock. They aren't cheap, but Jarco seems to be a pretty reputable company. I'll see if I can dig up their site...

EDIT: Found the site: http://www.jarcoinc.com/inventory/halfcuts/ Scroll half way down and you will see the Toyota diesel engines at the bottom of the Toyota section. They come as halfcuts, so you get the tranny, front diff, engine, etc.

The problem I forsee with getting a toyota diesel engine is sourcing parts when something breaks. It has to be bought and shipped from Asia, Australia, or Europe. Sure, it'd be awesome to go with Toyota for reliability, but maintanence might be a killer. I don't know if it'd fit in our 2nd gen bays, but the Cummins 4BT might be a good idea.
