Now when you say "towed" do you mean towed safetly over distance with some form of confidence in pulling the odd hill, stopping safetly. etc (and/or with proper trailer brakes whether they be surge or electric)? Or just a quick jaunt over the rated towing capacity for a few miles because it's more convenient from a logistics point of view to do what you have to do?
Are you looking to buy something specifically and looking for inputs as to weights you should be looking at? or something else?

I once hooked up to a 24" diameter pine tree stump and tried to pull it out. Sat there in Low 4wd just turning the tires....lol Does that count?
As far as trailers probably 2000lbs.

4,000lb Boat for about a mile around the block so i could get in position to put it in the side of our house. Wont do that again. Ill stick with keeping the boat on the back of the titan. It was just really tight with the titan opposed to the runner

do not try this at home....or on public roads
well it wasnt quite a 3.0...it was a 22r, 2.4 ltr, carborated, 1986, 2wd, short wheelbase pickup. when i got out of the military, they pay(by the pound) to move you back to your home of record. so i moved from fort carson colorado to phoenix arizona. i weighed my truck empty (2650) and then weighed it loaded down (9700). i have the reciepts somewhere. i cant find it, i think it was near 3500 on the truck and 6200 on the trailer. that was a 16 foot car hauler with a 93 maxima, plus all my household goods in the back of the truck and in the car. i had a top speed of 35 mph and took me 23 hours to make a 12 hour trip. i did have an electronic brake controller and dual axle brakes on the trailer. this picture was taken about 300 miles into the trip, just north of santa fe, NM. my truck finally started haveing a rod knock while towing my 74 FJ40 home from discount tire... that was probably near 6k lb load.

About 5K lbs. 94 4Runner, 5-speed, 32" bfg's. Put an 85 on a 16' car trailer and towed from Denver to Minneapolis.
By far the dumbest and most dangerous thing I've ever done in my life.

With a 3.0 4x4 5spd and 4.88 gears, I had my pickup full of wood (to the top of the bed) plus towing a 6x9 trailer full of wood 3 feet deep. I'm guess the trailer total weight was at least 5,000 lbs. Drove over a farm field, through a creek, and in town. About a 10 mile trip. I did this 8 times over the course of a winter. No ill effects. Lots of wood. Didn't drive fast, but went the speed limit (up to 55 mph).

I pulled my dad's 3/4ton diesel chevy ext cab (has to be at least 6000lbs) with at least 500 lbs of paving stones in the back about 5 miles when it died once. Had to keep it in 4 low all the way but she did it. pretty funny when you think about it, I'm sure my truck is about half the weight of his.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! I've had an '88 4 runner 4X4 22re for about a year now. It's my first Toyota and I love it. I just traded a '95 Suburban 3/4 ton 7.4 4X4 straight across for a '91 4 runner 4X4 3.0 with 184,000 mi. The reason I asked the towing question was that I have a 16' Maxum boat, probably weighs about 1700lbs if that. So it looks like I should be fine. I figure it should be rated to tow at least 3000lbs. Thanks again for the replies!
