Morse Code Diagnostic Check?

My check engine light has come on and I really do not want to pay someone to read it and the Autozone here can not read it either. Does anyone know how to do the More Code Diagnostic Check? I read my Haynes Manual and can not find it.

Procure a high priced scan tool:

Then read them yourself:

Wow I have never heard of that!

Isn't there a way to turn the key a certain amount of times to get the check engine light to start flashing?

I am not seeing it. All I see is him describing how to use a paper clip to do it. Which I will most likely end up doing (thanks 4crawler) but that is not what I am asking.

Here's another link: http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/codes/

and cut/pasted from the above link:

Assembly and Use Instructions:

* Simply unfold the scan tool.
* Precisely bend the legs to match the spacing of the diagnostic connector terminals.
o Early engines label them T and E1, later models may list them as T and TE1.
* Shove it in.
* Then turn on the ignition (but do not start the engine)
* Read the flashing code(s) on the Check Engine light.

Notes:

* Once you have found the diagnostic test connector, just insert a short piece of wire or even a bent paper clip into the contacts and turn the engine on (do not start it) and read the code(s) by counting the flashes of the Check Engine light.
o Here is a good article on the procedure to the later '80s and early '90s pickups and 4Runners.
o And for the '85 and similar 22RE engines, this chart has the codes for the earlier ECUs.
* A sharp eye may spot a mysterious round valve handle in the lower left corner of the picture above. If interested in what that is, you can find out more on this page.
* The Circuit Opening relay is located in the passenger side kick panel/A-pillar area.
o It may be located behind/above the ECU module, behind/beside the passenger front speaker.
o It is a small black box, about 2" square, likely need to pull the glove box to reach in from above.
+ Also back there are the headlight reminder module (black box) and the wiper control module (green box).
o It is a fairly expensive part and is likely only available from Toyota.

And, after tiring of fumbling around for something to jumper either the diagnostics or fuel pump test connector, I came up with a very simple solution. Using a piece of aluminum angle, pop-riveted to the lip of the fender, I drilled a couple of holes to mount a pair of SPST toggle switches. A pair of wires from each switch runs to the approriate test plug and now it is a simple matter to flip a switch and pull the diagnostics codes:
Fuel Pump and Diagnostics Switches
Fuel Pump and Diag. Switches

NOTEs:
The switches are not stock, I ADDED them and the aluminum panel to mount them on.
You DO NOT have to do this, I'm merely showing what I DID!
Also the blue electrical box in the lower right corner is the control box for an on-board welder and that is not stock either.
I ADDED it.
Finally note that the blue box is located where the stock 22RE air filter box is located.
Mine has obviously been moved elsewhere.

Again, not what I am looking for.

I KNOW there is a way to just turn the key a certain number of times to get the check engine light to flash a code. A mechanic friend did it and an AutoZone employee did it.

Someone has to. I don't need it now that I know another way, posted by 4crawler. I will just call AutoZone and ask tomorrow.

I have no idea about the Runners and trucks, but I know that you could do what some refer to as the "key dance" on the '90-93 Celicas. I would assume that the Runners and trucks would be the same. I wish I could remember how to do it, but at least I've heard of what you're talking about.

I'll see what I can find and post if I find it.

That is what you do, insert the diagnostic jumper, paper clip or as Toyota callls it an SST (Special Service Tool) and turn the ignition on.

If I remember correctly, you turn the key from off to run, off to run, off to run, and then read the codes.

I did this on my old Plymouth Breeze, and it worked just fine.

Yup, three times.

Make sure you have a pen and paper handy to record the number of flashes.

Before ODB-II, different vehicles had different ways of accessing the codes. What might work in one make/model won't necessarily work in another (the three key turns doesn't work on my '85 - just tried it, maybe it works on the newer TCCS systems). That was likely one of the goals for the ODB-II systems, to make all vehicles compatible as far as on-board diagnostics go. I set my '85 up with a switch hard-wired to the diagnostic connector, that way, I just flip a switch and turn the key on to check for stored codes or to check the ignition timing:

Just to clarify, there is NO WAY to turn the key X amount of times to get the code to flash.

You have to do what 4crawler posted above.

THANK YOU 4crawler is helped a bunch!
