Modifying Kayline 4runner Soft top

A friend of mine gave me an older Kayline soft top that he ended up with (That's right, FREE!). I was wondering, first, what kind of holes do you have to drill to mount the top as it comes from the factory? Are they on top of the bed rails or on the sides of the cab? I would prefer not having to put a bunch of holes that can lead to rust. Also, is it to possible to modify these tops so that they can be installed without drilling? I will have to replace a few snaps that have messed up and clean it up really well, so I don't mind trying to modify anything if it's a fairly easy project.

I have a brand new, never been used kayline top, just don't want to drill holes, so it sits in the box. 4crawler has the brackets that allow you to bolt without drilling.

Exactly why I've refused to buy a Kayline / STC top. Softopper is making one that requires no drilling. I'm getting one (on its way) from KillerToyTops.com which is also a "no-drill" design.

Yeah, I totally agree. If I were buying a top, I would have definetly bought one of the Killer Toy tops, but this was a freebie. Much easier on the pockets, even after modifying it. Thanks for the links and information.

If you know anyone that welds/fabricates it should not be hard for them to come up with the brackets necessary to make your top bolt on. I agree completely though, I would NEVER drill a hole in the body of my 4Runner. Maybe one of the Runners I've owned in the past but they were far past worrying about hurting them.

Another quick question: does the kayline roll up on the sides like a can-back? Because I noticed that it has three female snaps on the top of it on each side, but I can't figure out where the male counterparts are.

Hey 4crawler, about how many screws did you have to drill at the end of the frame that go into the truck when using your kit? And also, are they on top of the bed rails where the hard top will cover them when it is in place? I think your kit is probably going to be the best way to go. Thanks for the pictures.

You need a few screws on the ends of the pieces on the cab and likewise at the end of the bed and on the tailgate. All are covered by the hard top and/or gasket when the soft top is off.

Just on the back of the bed rail, under the straps off the rear corners.

I used the spot where the last hard top bolt goes and bolted a piece of uchannel(actually it's an old set of Hella 500 mounting brackets) there with a cross bolt to tie off the straps.

Thanks 4Crawler ad Blue.
I got it all finished now.
Blue you should head up my way sometime and we can wheel Walker Valley. Plus we are a few months away from snow wheeling season.

Here are a few crappy cell pics of the finished job.
