major issue. please help

having a big problem with my 89 pickup, V6 4WD manual transmission. I was driving this evening when i noticed a bit of a ticking noise from under the hood, I was close to home so i decided to just keep on going, experiencing major power loss along the way. I made it home at a slow crawl and when I pulled in the driveway she just died out. all the oil leaked out, from an unknown location, to much smoke to tell. i have no idea where to even begin.

If you're lucky, your lifters lost hydrolic pressure and caused the engine to die out before causing serious engine damage. If the lack of oil caused friction overheat, then the engine is done, which I fear is the case.

Lifters? Doesn't the 3VZE have rockers that press on the shims in the buckets over the valves? (no oil involved)

You'll need to clean things up and find out what happened. If you're VERY lucky you sprung an inconsequential oil leak that sprayed over the manifold. That's not consistent, though, with loss of power.

If cleaning and looking doesn't tell the tale, you could try pulling the plugs (to eliminate compression) and try turning the crank with a wrench. It shouldn't take a lot of force. If you ran it dry you may have seized a ring, and turning the crank (if you can do it at all) will feel awful.

After looking at some other forums, I noticed that a common oil leak issue has to do with the oil pump and seal... Does anyone have experience with how to do this job. I'm a novice when it comes to Toyota's so I'm on a bit of a learning curve. I think the engine itself is ok as it does still turn. But where can I find the oil pump and is there anything I should watch out for or be aware of before I pursue this job?

I'm not sure on how to remove oil pump but you'll have to go through this to get to it I'm pretty sure. When I had to replace my front main seal we took out radiator and all, took off all belts, removed timing case, removed crankshaft pully, removed timing belt and at very bottom there is your oil pump if I'm not mistaken. It's been awhile since I did it so I could be wrong on a few things but overall it was not very hard.

I appreciate all the help. I found the leak and repaired it and did some maintenance while I had it all apart. I replaced the valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, water pump, camshaft seals and plugs, crank shaft seal, timing belt, tension pulley and the pulley between the top timing gears.... Not sure of its name. I put it all back together and now it starts and runs great, until it gets to operating temperature. Then there is a hissing noise that sounds like its coming from under the plenum and the truck begins to idle like pure crap. There is some smoke or steam as well. I'm at a total loss and I'm not sure what to check or how to approach the issue. Can anyone offer insight?

check your pair reed valve, and look at all your hoses take pictures in hard to see areas. So we can get a visual of what you did, probably something is loose. And don't worry 3vze is a pain in the ass but a very very tough engine to kill.

After some research, I don't think this is my issue. It's on the driver side front of the engine.
