3vzfe Code 52 - Knock Sensor & Alternator Question

I have a CEL for Code 52 and rough idle. I have read through some threads which speak about tapping into the block to install an S10 knock sensor. Is this still something that's commonly accepted? Is there anything else I should be checking or doing? I have limited mechanical knowledge and this job seems to be a little over my head. Would anyone be able to walk me through this a bit more?

Also, my alternator seems to be finished. I'm trying to decide if I should replace the brushes or replace it. I'm still looking for a video that shows exactly how to do this. If I were to go with standard 60 AMP (please correct me if I'm wrong) where would you suggest I purchase from? Does anyone have an aftermarket high performance alternator? What would you suggest I do?

Thanks!
