lift tires and gears

i am new to the toyota scene and i just bought a 92 4runner... it has 31x10.5 tires on it which are nice but i would like to go to 33x12.5 or 33x10.5... now i heard i can run 33x10.5 with no lift but do i need to change my gears? and i want a small lift.. would a 2 or 3 inch body lift look good and would it fit the 33x12.5 thanks-cody

Do you want it to "look" good, or function?

i would recommend a suspension lift before a body lift.
search ball joint spacer lift.
gear choice depends on your transmission.
stick: 4.88's for 33's. but you might have 4.56's (I don't remember: this link might tell you: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/)

4.88s and 33s. 10.50s will fit. 12.50s will rub.
Lift it 2''. Whether or not the tire will fit, it looks like garbage jammed in that wheel well. Not to mention you'll lose flex.
I'm gonna do BJ spacers, then Downeys Torsion bar / 2'' Spring package
Once a few more paychecks roll in that is...

Looks are subjective, you're allowed to think whatever you like, but, no they won't rub and you won't lose any travel with 33x10.50. Personally, I think it looks WAY better than too much lift and big gap between the tire and fender.

Conversely, an IFS suspension lift will not allow any more travel, and in the smaller lifts, no room for bigger tires as the bumpstops are still in the same place.

What WILL lose you flex is going to a higher spring rate torsion bar like the Downey...

its a 5speed... not sure of the gears... and i want it to look good as well as perform good.. the reason i didnt consider suspension lift is the money... im thinking maybe a 2 inch body lift for the "look" and 33x10.5 mud tires for a little more grip and performance in the mud... is it bad if i put 33s with the stock gears?

I guess it comes down to your opinion. I think both too much and too little wheel well room are gross. Just a few inches looks good.
What I meant by losing flex is when that 33 is jammed in that wheel well where does it go when you flex? Another reason I'm going for 2'' with mine

Rumor has it that 4.88 is the magic number with 33s

Personally I would just save money for suspension lift. I say build it once and build it right.

i dont really wanna hijack the thread form the original poster but i really dont need a susp lift. im just trying to build a truck i can drive every day and looks great, and can get me where i wanna go. and my 4runner stock can get me where i wanna go well maybe if i had a locker lol. so most of anything i do is for looks or to rebuild what factory parts were lost to rust like the back bumper.

id save my money for a rough country... hear tell they are only about 500 dollars, and are good for 4 inches... hehe, thats dirty...

welcome to yotatech... nice to know that theres another member within reasonable driving distance to me...

anyways, i would look to see what your axle code is to tell what gearset your truck came with...

mine have 4.56s and it is an absolute DOG with 32x11.5s... i hate it, and im looking for 4.88s... but i imagine that 32x10.5s would be okay as less rolling resistance...

do some searches with the search function, and you will get a LOT more reviews...

If you have a manual transmission, 4.88 will put you at stock. Here at altitude, I wish I had 5.29, but then my 4Runner is HEAVY (5200 lbs).

Nope - 33x10.50 on stock backspacing will still stuff to the bumpstop before hitting the fender. Spend the money if you like, but it's wasted IMHO.
