leaking hydraulic clutch cylinder

1987 4Runner 4wd 5speed Started having trouble shifting yesterday. Checked and the fluid was almost empty in top resevoir.
I topped it off and adjusted clutch and was ok until it sat 15 minutes then tough shifting again so I saw it leaking the clutch fluid from rubber boot underneath truck where the lower cylinder is (plunger rod end). I read about MASTER and SLAVE cylinders. Is the lower one called the slave? Any tricks to replacing this besides bleeding as the manual shows?

Jim and Amy here. The manual calls it a "Release Cylinder". That is what is leaking so I see it is not the Master Cyl. Can I fix mine by replacing the piston as in photo?

You can go to autozone and get a lifetime warranty one for a decent price. I know people on here aren't to fond of autozone, but I haven't had a problem with parts from them (when they gave me the right part to begin with). Just a thought.

Yes I ordered a 12 dollar replacement at Advance Auto. I checked and a 10 mm open end is slightly lose. I plan on buying a wrench to do the job right. Do I buy a 10mm tubing wrench or is there a different tool. I thought I read in a thread about a member mentioning a "flaired" 10mm but is that same as a tubing wrench?

HERE is the reference of a flare wrench. Do you think that is same as a tubing wrench?

"okay i replaced the master cylinder for the clutch and had no pressure in my clutch after that.. so ima replace my slave cylinder and cant find the right size wrench for the fittings?? is it like a 9.5 mm??? cause 10 too big 9 too small and standard sizes do the same? soo yeh please need help..


It's a 10mm wrench, you need a flare wrench, not an open ended...

So there is no taper to the grip walls? , just good 6 point contact?

Just a suggestion but on a 20+ year old vehicle if you're replacing the clutch slave cylinder I would replace the master while you've got your hands dirty. There's a ggod chance it'll be just as worn and replacing them both now will save you having to do the master a few months down the road.
