Im thinking of getting a new cam for my 86 4Runner, i was thinking of the engine builder 261c cam and a downey header. will i see noticable gains with this set up ?, and what about the exhaust, what size pipe should i use 2.25 or 2.50 ?. How hard is it to change a cam, is it just a matter of unbolting the old cam and putting in the new cam and readjusting everything ?.

not hard. but unless you are truly gifted, you should replace the head gasket. and check the timing chain + guides.

 

The 261 is the cam I want also. How many of you guys with new cams replaced your rocker arms? I know Roger Brown recommends it and it seems like a good idea.

I have the same cam, header and engine.....

power gains were negligible but noticeable........it sounds really cool though!

 

i think that would depend on how high the mileage. i didn't, but then there is only 64k on it when i installed the cam.

 

Absolutely replace the rocker arms when installing a new cam. Only use OEM toyota rockers.

 

I have reused rockers , IF they are in good condition. No abnormal wear, no eaten cam lobes, etc. I break the glaze on them with a very fine emery cloth, then polish with some scotchbrite, by hand usually on glass or a flat surface. I have mic'd the shafts, the rocker bores, etc. The FSM outlines the measurement details.
