Injectors Bad?

Well a few days ago my friends 1986 22RE started running quite badly, blowing lots of black smoke out the pipe.

Now, it will start for 1/2 second and thats it.

Pulled a fuel line and checked pump, working good. Check AFM, all to spec and tried another one just in case.

Now, went to change the fuel filter, and found out someone spliced a piece of line in its place. Disconnected it, a bunch of black gas with a bunch of crap came out of the line coming off of the fuel rail/injectors.

Sooo...question is....Should we just toss these ones and swap for another? Or are they salvageable.

Likely salvagable - send 'em to witchhunter.com...
I suppose they could be stuck open...

Does the oil smell like gas?

As other said they can probably be cleaned/serviced which is a lot cheaper then buying new ones.

Make sure the oil gets changed. Extra fuel can "wash" the cylinders of oil and cause a much more significant failure...

I've seen an injector stay open once - it'd be odd for all of them to stay open and would indicate a break in the wiring harness and unintentional grounding... Do all 4 plugs look rich?

Another cause could be an unplugged or shorted engine temp control sender - the one in front of the lower manifold. Unplugged = super cold = super rich.

It would be worth checking the cold start injector as well. I have never seen one stick open but if it did you would get similar results.

Good post dcg- Diagnosis before spending money usually makes the job go better, financially speaking. I like posts like yours that give a guy a few things to think about instead of rushing out and spending a ton of money on parts they don't need.
