I have a '95 Pickup 3.0L with 8" lift and 36s. I recently decided I wanted to do a SAS on my truck. I mostly just mud ride and will occassionally run into some rocks but my question is would it be beneficial for me to change out the IFS to a SFA because I have heard two different arguments? I'm for the SFA but there's some ppl that tell me I'm not gaining anything by going n putting a toyota 8" in it. Should I just leave the IFS in it n just put a limited slip or something in it or would you change it over?

 

If you just plan on mainly mud then doing a SAS seems like alot of work for no real gain. Do you plan on getting more into rock crawling in the future? If not then just leave it be and maybe put your money somewhere else.

 

I personally wouldn't wheel an IFS rig with over 35 inch tires... It's just asking for something to break (CV's, Idler Arm, etc).

I run IFS myself, but if I were you I'd do a SAS! ESPECIALLY if you're gonna be putting in a limited slip. Those CV shafts will snap like twigs if you get a tire wedged in somewhere.

Don't underestimate the Toyota 8"! It's a pretty stout little axle and should hold up fine for just mudding and even some crawling if you don't abuse your rig! If you ever want something stronger then there are plenty of goodies (Dirty30's, longfields, etc) that you can throw at it!

 

Oh Rly? Its mud. The IFS is alot stronger then most give it credit for.

You'll be blowin up Birfs just as fast as CV's with a stock SA runnin 36's.

 

If ya cross a lot of deep ruts or wash outs the sfa will help you there

just get some lockers and nice shocks and be done with it. I dont like solid axle swaps... I think they normally end up looking goofy. If you start breaking Cvs and axles just sell it and buy a full sized truck with a v8 that already has a solid front axle

 

That is just plain bad advice.

 

i have both. i wheel both. i like both. a cv is cheap and easy to replace and having that as your weak link saves a lot on the rest of the drive line.ifs rides better too. solid fronts will flex more and require less attention over all and may be a little sronger but a little more involved and pricey to work on imo. i feel there are other mods that make more of difference than what type of axle youve got. run what ever makes you happy because this debate will go on forever.they will both break and will need to be fixed or your not doing it right.

 

Why? please elaborate? I love mudding with my ifs v6 and 33s.. I gotta say I get through a ton of stuff that solid axle vehicles like the J word get stuck in all the time (I wave as I fling mud on them ) I would throw in some lockers first and see how it does (you might be impressed!)

Im just saying if you want the ultimate mud truck you need 3/4 ton axles and a v8 motor... simply the easiest way to get that is an 80s truck with a solid axle. The solid axle swaps are one way to go and v8 swaps are cool but its a lot of money and work.

 

The first part of your post was just opinion and that is neither here nor there but to say lose the yota and go to a full size makes no sense.

You'll run into the same issue if you jumped up to a stock full size truck as you would a Toyota. Stuff will break unless you wanna drop some coin. Not to mention the reliability issues.

From what I gather from the OP he has a truck that he runs in the mud and for whatever reason thinks a SAS will be beneficial.

It is my opinion a SAS would not gain him anything performance wise with what he does with his truck.

 

For the price of a sas you could probaly find a rusty sfa yota and have a wheeler and a pavement princess
