Question

What torsion bars and shocks are you using. I have a Total Chaos kit on my 89 Hilux with Sway-A-Way torsion bars and Fox 2.5 remote reservoir shocks. It takes jumps pretty good but it rides like a buckboard wagon.

Your torsion bars are the rough ride. I had them on a v6 truck and they were stiff as crap

didnt know you could run torsion bar with TC kit. i guess its an older kit.
i have Blazeland LT kit with OME torsion bar and Bilstein shocks. it rides really good and soaks up bumps and pot holes really good. i dont think i could jump mine but if yours can handle jumps pretty good. that means your torsion bars could be stiffer than what im running. should look into coilovers. what do you have in the rear? since your a truck with not much weight in the rear, it could be bouncing in the rear making think its the front

I remember looking at a basic Total Chaos kit before. It was much cheaper.

You can still get them.

It's still $2020 but is on sale all the time. It was on sale for last time I looked at it ages ago.

I have a set of Downey rear springs that are indeed stiffer then the front. I plan on putting Chevy 63" springs in the rear soon.

I could bottom my Blazeland/sway away torsion/Bilstein setup on foot high drop offs. My Zuk mod rear didn't bottom on that.

Went to TC.with sway away shocks and eibachs. the rear is now the weak point, shocks and spring rate, by far. Overall articulation has not changed, so I haven't posted any new pics yet

I have OME t-bars and Bilstein 5100. I don't do alot of jumps with it, but sometimes I get a little air when I'm hauling through washes but not much.

Overall it handles and rides great - waaaaaaaaaaaay better than stock.

I've run both coil over spring and torsion bar spring on my rigs using the same set of control arms. For coil spring I've used 500lb, 600lb and 700lb springs. For T-bar I've used 22mm, 25mm, and 26mm dia. torsion bar springs. Either method has variations in spring rate according to the diameter of the coil or the bar. As far as how they load up that too has variations. As the t-bar twist it gets progressively stiffer differently than what happens to the coil spring as it compresses.

For Stand Alone Torsion Bar Springs:

Crank in the pre-load with 22mm springs and long arms its difficult to maintain the ride height (lift) and it will feel soft. It will flex decent but wont work well for higher speed impacts.

Moderate pre-load the 25mm springs and you will be able to maintain ride height and it will feel stiffer. It will be harder to flex at slow speed but it will work better at whoops.

Thicker than 26mm torsion bars (or M300) with heavy pre-load wont flex much but will allow high speed impacts and wont hard bottom.

For Stand Alone Coil Springs:

What was said about the Torsion Bar springs above applies to the coil springs similarly.

Combination Coil Spring /T-bar:

I've messed around with using both the coil spring and the T-bar in combination. For the combo method I like a 22mm T-bar with a light pre-load and a 250lb coil spring at moderate pre-load.

Control Arm Design:

Control arm construction method or materials doesn't affect the suspension geometry or ride characteristics. It will however affect weight and strength.

Other Factors:

Not to open a can of worms but another consideration is dampening and limiting stops. Tuning these items can get complex and expensive. Tuning these items doesn't affect the geometry it only effects the ride characteristics. For example a slow speed trial rig like Jeff or Toyo has shown doesn't need triple bypass shocks, dual rate springs, air bumps, or limit straps where as edeslaur who is building a pre-runner might want the upgrades.

Triple bypass, air bumps, and limiting straps are my entry. :-) like my JeepSpeed Cherokee had.

This also means stiffer springs, all of which adds up to reduced flex.

It also means heavier shock dampening, which results in a stiffer ride, especially when the oil is cold. You can really feel the difference as the oil warms up.

If your ride is too stiff, call Fox and get their input.

I am really close to getting FOA bump stops... I have the cash im just waiting a few days to make sure i want to pull the trigger on them.

On my T100 I am currently running a Blazeland kit with 600lb springs on my coilovers, no torsion bars. It flexes good and does decent on the bigger hits but is a little soft. Im thinking adding the bumps and setting them as sort of a poor mans bypass may work pretty well...

the driver side tire is on the ground. passenger rear tire just off the ground.

It's not long travel, but this video shows the limits of my set up at the time, for sure. I don't remember if I had low-profile bump stops yet or not.

Nice video. What locker did you get for your 7.5" diff?

Oh nice, is the Spartan for the front different from the rear? I've got one as well in the rear.

Do you notice loud noises in parking lots as well? It winds up then lets go with a bang. People turn and look at my truck when it happens. It's quite a sharp crack.

Yeah, the front 7.5" diff takes a different version of the Spartan, everything is different sizes and all.

And yes, some days I can't tell my rear locker is even back there, and other days it sounds like my truck is trying to tear itself apart. I'd love to have selectable in the rear, but $$$.
