If i replace the idler arm and bracket that goes with it do i need to have an alignment done? and should replace the relay rod and tie rods while im at it?

 

i did not align or replace anything other than the idler arm. did not affect my steering.

 

1. If it's aligned currently, or was before the idler arm needed replaced, then there's a good chance you might come out aligned afterwards without having to mess with it. But if you don't know nothing about aligning the wheels, then you'll need to atleast have somebody that does take a look at it and see where it sits. And if you do that, and it needs aligned, then you're in the right place...to get it aligned(he should be able to align it if he knows that it needs aligned).

2. Why? Are they shot too?

 

I had to replace the idler arm in mine a few years ago, and thought that I would be fine afterwards, as like MudHippy says, that if it is aligned prior then it should be after. In my case was FAIL.
It resulted in my left front wheel getting eaten up on the inside edge. I didn't catch it until the inside of the tire was bare.
I then kicked myself in the ass and got it aligned and changed out my spare tire with the pooched one. $100 later, a valuable lesson was learned... Get it checked. Most shops will actually run the alignment test and if you pass, they don't charge you!

 

Well, the idler arm IS an integral part of the front suspension / steering system.
IF it was sufficiently worn to require replacement, then you SHOULD have an alignment done.
It directly affects toe settings and indirectly affects camber and caster.
